There are 3 points here. The first is that you are assuming christianity is a cohesive unit. It is not, there are numerous different sects within the religion, each claiming that they are right and it's followers are going to be saved, and all the rest are wrong and will be rejected on judgement day. It cannot really be called a single religion now.
The second point is that when it was a single religion under the catholic church, if you dared speak out or question their beliefs you would be burned at the stake.
The third is that the church suppressed the masses by denying them knowldge or the opportunity to learn simply to maintain it's dominance for over 1000 years.

I disagree a hundred percent with this question. Christians are not dominant of anything. Lets say, you tell a Christian, " I don't believe in your God" the Christian doesn't, blow up your home, your school or your church or your market place and don't forget neither do they saw off your head with dull knife like those in the middle east. DOMINANT a. [L., to rule; lord, master; a house; to overcome, to subdue.] Christians are far from dominant. Christians can barely overcome the world much-less be dominant over someone else. May I add, Faith is not religion.

It's those tasty little wafers they serve at communion. This is why none of the Protestant religions will ever have the lasting, worldwide success of Catholicism. Also, don't underestimate the drawing power of a great hat. The Pope wears great hats.

Violent campaigns of repression over a period of hundreds of years. Countless thousands of people were murdered, maimed, and exiled in the process. The common folk did not give up their cherished beliefs easily. Eventually, the monolithic organization of the Christian church, bolstered by threats of economic isolation and assisted by an energetic propaganda campaign, triumphed over the valiant but unsophisticated tribes.
