Okay well first of all you should just be honest... but if you need some help, pick from the following:

This isn't working for me. I think we could both be happier.

I need some time to focus on school/work/family.

It's not you, it's me.

You're a great guy (it's ok to lie here), I am sure you will find someone amazing.

I'm sorry if I am hurting you, but I think we both know this is for the best.

(Then don't see him or talk to him for at least 3 months, longer if possible. Otherwise you're messing with him and giving mixed messages)

Good luck! (haha for both you and him)

Be honest.
Be kind.
Be to the point - kinda like pulling a band aid off, quicker is really better.

So many times people want to say things in such a nice way, like "i just need some space" or whatever - which gives the dumpee a faint strand of false hope, very cruel.

Hard conversations often begin with "We need to talk."

Good luck, it's difficult knowing that it's going to hurt him, just do your best to be kind to him while being true to yourself.

Dear baby, welcome to dumpsville (population you). No, I'm just playing with you...

How about:
1) We're going in different directions
2) This is a bit too much for me right now I think we should take a break
3) My life is really crazy at the moment and I'm not sure what I want
4) I need some time to work on me for a while
5) I think we should be free to see other people and see where things go

DON'T SAY I hope we can still be friends. You probably can't.

Good luck.

just be honest with him, and tell him the real reason why you want to break up whatever the reason may be {honesty is the best policy}. I think you would want him to be honest with you if the tables were turned. You don't need any lines.

It would help to know why. "This relationship is not working" is one very vague phrase that usually works in every situation.

Marveliss is right. Quick, like a band aid, and have the guts to do it face to face. Just say, this isn't working out, and please don't call me anymore.
