I know it causes the body to retain water but I heard a story that it also causes people not to loose fat as easily and actually gain fat. Any input?

If you are gaining weight quickly I would bet you eat a lot of high sodium foods. High sodium foods makes the body retain water and therefore the scale goes up on a daily basis. If the sodium is not released then the weigh gain has an accumulative affect and you could gain at least 10 pounds in just 3 days.

Some high sodium foods: soups, pastries, canned foods, fast foods, salty foods, olives, pickles, processed meats, frozen dinners/entrees, some sodas, some cereals, many cheeses, soy sauce, and condiments to name a few. Check the labels of foods for the sodium content.

The fat forms when you eat the wrong kind of foods. Keep away from hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated and trans fat oils. They will not only help in fat formation but in time clog the arteries. Sodium is not related to those, therefore cannot form fat. You were probably given unclear information. Sodium can retain body fluids and produce swelling effects throughout several parts of the body.

Sodium will not cause you to gain "fat". Large amounts of sodium does have negative affects on health but, it is rarely the sole culpret in health issues. The problem is that most foods that contain a large amount of sodium also contain large quantities of fat and saturated fat. Ex. bugers, hotdogs and pizza. These foods eaten on a regular basis will cause fat gains and have a negative affect on overall health.

Sodium is a required electrolyte and you must have it to function. Too much sodium can cause water retention which is seen in the feet and hands first. If you aren't adding salt to your food but are eating things that are canned, frozen, processed foods like sandwich meats and potato chips you are probably getting enough. My sister almost died from low sodium. so, don't try to cut it out completely, it is dangerous. Your body needs it to function properly. Good luck.

No. In fact, it helpd keep electrolyte counts up, so the more sodium in your diet, the faster you burn energy (and hence fat) whilst exercising. However, the more sodium in your diet, the more saturated fats you need to have in your diet to keep the ratio even. Generally, you want a ratio of 2 pounds of fat for every 1 pound of sodium. Recomended daily sodium intake: 1 1/4 pounds.

Theoretically it does... you need water to flush the fats from your system, and if you are retaining water, then it's not flushing the fat out of your system. I don't think it would actually CAUSE you to gain weight, but it would probably slow down weight loss.
