So, I had a transport and he had to stay over night with a friend. He yelled all night. Now he hollers every time I am away from him, even if it is just to take the other dogs for a walk. I have tried praising him for not screaming and ignoring him. This is not the whine or the broo. This is the full monty screaming! HELP!!!

thanks, but it is not classic sep. anxiety. He is fine crated when I leave, this is more like when he knows I am home and need to do something without him for a few min. (like shower or feed the cat).

Hi, yep, he's a p.b. He was dumped on the side of the highway... I thought he was a rat terrier who did not bark, and something was really wrong lol! Then his ears went up and his tail curled over and the brooo came on! He doesn't bark but he has a lot of vocalizations to let me know what he wants. He even has a specific sound for when the cat wants in or out!

It's not uncommon for puppies who have been recently removed from their moms and siblings to scream. That incredibly loud sound you're hearing is instilled in the pups by Nature: it's screaming for its mother (and the sound is meant to carry over long distances).

The best way to deal with it is to simply let the pup have its howl out. Don't yell at it or scold it (you'll only make it more agitated and anxious). Instead, put it in a room by itself, tell it once or twice to calm down, and then IGNORE it. And don't be surprised if it takes a whole night or more for it to calm down.

It's frightened and has no experience with coping with "abandonment". As long as you remain calm and give it a few reassurances that it's all right, it will eventually calm itself down.

[[And we have to ask: Is this a pure bred Basenji? I thought they were supposed to be "barkless" dogs.]]
