There is no sweet way... The best way is honesty.
If it is over you should tell them and not ramble on.
Be kind, don't bash them, don't be malicious.
Tell them it is over and that you are moving on.
I would not apologize or go into great detail, it will cause more hard feelings and upset.
Unfortunately the other person will get hurt, so the best thing is to make it short , honest and sweet.

Tell him that you think your relationship is not going to work out in the long run and if you guys stay together you wont be friends later in life so you want to break up with and be BEST FRIENDS and that you still love him a lot but as a best friend

There is no such thing...no matter how hard you try... someone will be hurt. And you ask sweet? Let me ask this...is there a sweet way to tell your little brother that his mom died? Nope!
Negative situations are never sweet moments.

be honest. meet with them, but before tell them that you need to talk (might lower the level of shock). then just tell them in privacy and try and stay calm and (if you want) try and stay friends with them if you can.

HONESTY IS THE ONLY SWEET WAY. IF THE PERSON REALLY CARES ABOUT YOU, THERE IS NO WAY TO ESCAPE FROM HURTING THEM. JUST BE HONEST AND DO NOT KEEP THEM HANGING ON TO SOMETHING THAT IS NOT GOING TO WORK.
