No one knows. Scholars have been trying to figure that out for centuries.

Some believe that it might have been another one of Da Vinci's jokes and it is actually a self portrait of himself made up as a woman.

Actually there is a lot of data to back up that theory.Still, she remains a mystery though.

Mona Lisa, or "La Femme Giaconda", is famous for one thing.....she sat for a rather mysterious portrait done by Leonardo Da Vinci.

She was a married woman, rather young (estimates place her in her early 20's when the portrait was done), who, for whatever enigmatic reason, had a strange smile on her face while Leonardo sketched her out for the portrait.

The portrait, done in his now famous "sfumato" style (means soft), is probably the most famous he ever produced. Over one shoulder, the land appears close......over the other, it's far away. She's wearing a thin veil, something that other artists of the time would never have included.

There is a possibility that she was a portrait of Mary Magdaline. Da Vinci knew about the Magdaline- Jesus marraige, and could have painted her as smiling in such a way as to hide their secret love affair.

Know body knows. But she looks like someone who is looking at something that pleases her. Her smile is in her eyes and that is her beauty.

Some people say it's just DaVinci in drag basically and she was never a real person. He was known for his tricks.

She was most likely a he...looks like a he anyway.

DaVinci was a freak like that and used his boy "lovers" as models for his art.

I think 'She' smiles cause he is happy in drag.
