A Comparison Between Christian Doctrine
and Mormon Doctrine

"Take up the Bible, compare the religion of the Latter-day Saints with it and see if it will stand the test"
(Brigham Young, May 18, 1873, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 16, page 46.)

Following is a comparison between Christian doctrine and Mormon doctrine. It will become very obvious that Mormonism does not agree with the Bible. In fact, Mormonism has simply used the same words found in Christianity and redefined them. But with a proper understanding of what Mormonism really teaches, you will be able to see past those definitions into the real differences between Christianity and Mormonism.
The difference is the difference between eternal life and damnation.

Topic Christian Mormon
GOD There is only one God (Isaiah 43:11; 44:6,8; 45:5) "And they (the Gods) said: Let there be light: and there was light (Book of Abraham 4:3)

God has always been God (Psalm 90:2; Isaiah 57:15) "God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens!!! . . . We have imagined that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea and take away the veil, so that you may see" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 345
God is a spirit without flesh and bones (John 4:24; Luke 24:39) "The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man's" (Doctrine and Covenants 130:22. Compare with Alma 18:26-27; 22:9-10)
"Therefore we know that both the Father and the Son are in form and stature perfect men; each of them possesses a tangible body . . . of flesh and bones." (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 38).
TRINITY The Trinity is the doctrine that there is only one God in all the universe and that He exists in three, eternal, simultaneous person: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The trinity is three separate Gods: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. "That these three are separate individuals, physically distinct from each other, is demonstrated by the accepted records of divine dealings with man." (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 35.)
JESUS Jesus was born of the virgin Mary (Isaiah 7:14; Matt. 1:23) "The birth of the Saviour was as natural as are the births of our children; it was the result of natural action. He partook of flesh and blood - was begotten of his Father, as we were of our fathers." (Journal of Discourses, Vol. 8: p. 115)
"Christ was begotten by an Immortal Father in the same way that mortal men are begotten by mortal fathers" (Mormon Doctrine," by Bruce McConkie, p. 547)
Jesus is the eternal Son. He is second person of the Trinity. He has two natures. He is God in flesh and man (John 1:1, 14; Col. 2;9) and the creator of all things (Col. 1:15-17) Jesus is the literal spirit-brother of Lucifer, a creation. (Gospel Through the Ages, p. 15)
THE
HOLY
SPIRIT The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity. He is not a force. He is a person. (Acts 5:3-4; 13:2) Mormonism distinguishes between the Holy Spirit (God's presence via an essence) and the Holy Ghost (the third god in the Mormon doctrine of the trinity).
"He [the Holy Ghost] is a being endowed with the attributes and powers of Deity, and not a mere force, or essence (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 144)
SALVATION Salvation is the forgiveness of sin and deliverance of the sinner from damnation. It is a free gift received by God's grace (Eph. 2:8; Rom. 6:23) and cannot be earned (Rom. 11:6). Salvation has a double meaning in Mormonism: universal resurrection and . . .
"The first effect [of the atonement] is to secure to all mankind alike, exemption from the penalty of the fall, thus providing a plan of General Salvation. The second effect is to open a way for Individual Salvation whereby mankind may secure remission of personal sins (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 78-79.
Salvation (forgiveness of sins) is not by works (Eph. 2:8; Rom. 4:5; Gal. 2:21) "As these sins are the result of individual acts it is just that forgiveness for them should be conditioned on individual compliance with prescribed requirements -- 'obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.'" (Articles of Faith p. 79)
BIBLE The inspired inerrant word of God (2 Tim. 3:16). It is authoritative in all subjects it addresses. "We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly. . ." 8th Article of Faith of the Mormon Church.

Wow. Big Question. Where to begin...............

Mormonism was founded in the late 1700's/early 1800's by Joseph Smith who claimed that God and Jesus both came down out of heaven and gave him some golden plates with writing on them in another language that needed to translated. (In his own personal writings he admits to being jacked up on Paote, a mexican drug) These writings have been put into what we now call The Book of Mormon. Smith's teaching basically gave free license to take as many wife's as one would want and also changed the Bible teaching of who Jesus is. You may see many mormons walking around with a King James Bible in their hands, but after joining the Latter Day Saints group you won't see that book much longer as the life will be engrained with the Book of Mormon. Also, a few changes were made to their version of the King James Bible, opening the door to move their believers into the teaching of the Book of Mormon.

One major change is in Genesis Chap 3 where the serpent is tempting Eve to eat the fruit from the tree. the actually King James and many other versions (NIV, NRSV) read....v. 4 "You will not surely die," the serpent said to the woman. 5 "For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."
The Mormans have changed in the phrase "you will be like God" the capital G "GOD" to "a god" opening the door to the subject of there being many gods.
So, teaching from the Book of Mormon, the LDS would teach that if you follow their ways and do what they tell you to do, you too, could become a god and have your own planet with goddesses and god-like children. Kind of kooky.

Christianity is based on faith in the Lord Jesus Christ for the salvation of mankind. Jesus was the promised messiah and king prophesied about throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament is the explaination and revelation of His coming and that He will come again.

We put our faith in Jesus Christ that He died on the cross for our sins and rose from the dead to cover our sins forever and that we might also overcome sin and death. He will forgive us for our sins and bring us into new life in Christ. We leave our old life of sin behind and walk on in newness of life in Christ.

John 14.6 "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No man comes to the Father except by me."

Romans 10.9-11 "9 If you use your mouth to say, "Jesus is Lord," and if you believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you will be saved. 10 We believe with our hearts, and so we are made right with God. And we use our mouths to say that we believe, and so we are saved. 11 As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be disappointed."

Hope that helps.

They believe the Bible to the extent that it has been translated correctly. They recognize the Book of Mormon as another testimony of Jesus Christ. Mormons are strict Christians. Their devout way of life caused them great persecutions by the ruffians that lived on the western borders of Missouri, Illinois, and Michigan. They have no fixed creed; as they believe revelation from God is the fountain of knowledge. The Bible testifies that when God stops speaking to man it is due to sin and disbelief.

Pursuit of salvation should be the subject of greatest concern. Jesus is to return very soon, "In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ." (2 Thess. 1:8) The Bible tells that most people on the earth will soon be destroyed by fire, pestilence, and plagues more horrible than the mind can imagine. It also provides the only escape from this desolation; often called Armageddon.

This mortal life is like a snap of the fingers when compared to eternity. The Bible tells only a very few, in the last days, will find the gate into the kingdom of God. We owe no greater debt to ourselves and our families than to exert every effort required to find salvation; and spiritual truth. Here are the real Biblical answers to life, death, heaven, hell, and eternal life. Most Christians are not aware of either the true nature of hell, or that Jesus went to hell for three days after He died. Hell is a hidden place for those spirits that knew not God and obeyed not the gospel. Jesus spent three days preaching the gospel to these spirits; so they might share in the promise of salvation with all who obey the will of God.

They believe that the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is the only true and living God; and that His only begotten Son Jesus Christ is the only pathway to salvation through the gospel. They believe the gospel of Christ precisely as it is given in the Bible.

They believe the organization of the kingdom of God and Church of Christ is the same in all generations; having officers with divine authority to act in the name of God. These had authority to bind on earth and in heaven. From baptism to marriage, families were united in death, the resurrection, and for eternity. Were you only married, "until death do you part"? Why? In 325 AD, Constantine reorganized the Christian Church; and adopted the gods, authority, rest day, doctrines, rites, and festivals of paganism.

Mormons accept the teaching, throughout the Bible, that only those called of God (by prophecy) and "anointed" (ordained) by one holding divine authority are the only ones empowered to minister in the name (authority) of God. They believe in all the gifts of the Holy Ghost; including the gift of prophecy.

They believe in strict obedience to the laws of God; including the ten commandments, love of God and man, and the same seventh day Sabbath given to Adam and Moses, that was to be kept as a perpetual covenant
