He is a very intelligent boy, but this just seems impossible. We have been working on it since he was 3.

OH YEAH....We tried the close your mouth thing....he just can't get it. This sounds gross, but I tell him to blow out the stuff and he sucks it all in.!!!!

I'm having a hard time with this too! (w/my 6 year old) He too only wants to suck in...I tell him to pretend he's blowing out the birthday candles with his nose. Another way to at least make sure his nose is getting cleared out is to have him take a nice steamy shower. That loosens stuff up and makes it easier to clear out the passages.

I taught my 2 year old how to blow his nose after his first real cold. Now I have another problem--he thinks it is cool to blow through his nose on everything. I started out without a kleenex--just showed him how to blow through his nose. If you have a harmonica it is really fun to teach him with it. It will come as a big surprise when he blows through his nose into the harmonica and makes music. Expect him to suck it back in instead of out--that is very normal. Good luck and make it fun.

This is a method I heard of, I can't remember where.... When they are well and do not have a stuffy nose, have a lit candle on a cupcake or other similar small snack. Tell your child to blow the candle out using their nose power. When the blow the candle out with their nose, they get to eat the treat. Then when it comes time to blow their nose for real to get rid of the "contents", tell them to pretend they are blowing out a candle on their treat, then reward them with a sticker chart or something like that. The idea that kids love to blow out their birthday candles will find it a challenge to blow out a candle using their nose. Good luck!

With my daughter I would hold a tissue to my nose and blow and let the tissue fly into the air she thought this was hilarious and of course wanted to do it too, It took some time, and after alot of sucking in, Yuk! but she did finally get the hang of it!

I had this problem with my son too. He loved dinosaurs so I asked him how would a dino blow his nose? Then I held a tissue and told him to fill up that tissue like a T-Rex, and sure enough!
If he likes superheros us them - whatever works.

Good Luck!

I'm sorry, but that's kinda funny! I love your name, bytheway.

Try having him just breathe through his nose with his mouth shut. Breathe in, out, in, out. Then tell him to do it harder, and harder and harder.

Put a tissue under his nose and plug one side, blow, then plug the other side, blow, then wipe.

Good luck!
