Hannah had a cortizone shot last week and blood work (her hindquarters freeze up once in a while but the vet gave her a clean bill of health. Took x-rays, etc. Anyways, now her cough sounds hoarse and she is coughing up clear phlegm (spelling?) She didn't stay at the vet's - it was just a visit. Can dogs get colds?

Thanks - Jodi

Yes dogs can get colds, as well as Kennel Cough.

Here's a bit of information. Sorry that it's cut and pasted, the information is provided via my vet; however you can only access it if you are a client and have a portal:

"Parainfluenza is one of the agents responsible for some forms of Kennel Cough (tracheobronchitis). Kennel Cough is a highly contagious respiratory disease in dogs. Several viruses can cause tracheobronchitis including Parainfluenza and Bordetella bronchiseptica. This respiratory disease is often transmitted from dog to dog while boarding at a kennel. Dogs come in contact with other dogs who are either sick with the disease or carriers of the virus.

Kennel cough is usually not life threatening but the cough can be persistent for weeks after treatment.

Disease Signs:

Dry, spastic cough
Retching after cough
Nasal congestion
Prevention:

Vaccinate dogs on the prescribed schedule for Parainfluenza (usually included in the Distemper Vaccine). Dogs that are visiting boarding kennels should be vaccinated with the Bordetella bronchiseptica vaccine as well."

There are other dieases/illness that can resemble coughing including distemper (depending on the signs).

The best person to talk to is your VET. Please call immediately and try to get one to call you back ASAP or speak to you over the phone right then and there. They will give you the correct information about what it can be. Most likely they will ask you to bring in your dog for an exam and proper medication.Good Luck.

Dogs can get "kennel cough" (an airbourne bacterial infection) if they come in contact with another dog that has the disease (and it's not uncommon for dogs to pick this up from other dogs at the vet's office); they can also get "dog flu" which is a more serious viral infection often misdiagnosed as kennel cough.

We suggest that you call your vet and let him know of her condition. Kennel cough is easy to control with medication.

Dogs don't get what we could consider a "cold". She probably has Kennel Cough. Take her back to the vet and get some antibiotics. Hope she is feeling better!
