Self-mutilation, if performed for no apparent or outside cause, is reason enough to seek assistance from a professional. whether that person is a social worker, counselor, advisor or full mental health worker (Physchiatrist or psyschologist) makes no difference...just seek help. Cutting, scratching or any other form of self destructive behavior is NO BETTER or worse than any other type. It is NOT uncommon and is nothing to be ashamed of...simply ask someone for help.

Absolutly not!!! All you have to do is get a knife (12 inches + is best) and go to town on your wrist. Besides, what are you going to do with your fingernails? Maybe just draw an eigth of a pint of blood. Not at all satisfying. BTW, listen to dashboard confessional while doing it for the ultimate emo scene (death is optional, you can usually hold on until the paramedics come if your parents here the knife hit the ground).

Neither one is good. However, I think that scratching is better than cutting. Cutting is more dangerous than scratching. When you cut it is too easy to cut a vein.

Cutting will do more damage and the chance of infection is greater.
However, both are signs of a serious illness which requires immediate attention.

I wish for their sake that self harmers would squeeze a cube of ice in their hand instead of break their skin. It would be uncomfortable enough to give them the release of endorphines they want without damaging their poor bodies.

I think both are bad.Unless you are itching then it is ok to scratch the itch.Cutting I dont understand. But it sounds like a terrible thing to do to yourself.I guess to get attention.

Yes. If you are doing either seek professional help immediately. This is serious stuff and needs to be treated seriously.
