As a retired mental health professional with 20+ years experience, I can tell you that the answer here is that we have become such a self-centered culture that everyone has to have a "disorder" in order to have or be something "special", and they'll go to the gutter to out-do the other in claiming their "disorder". And laziness, and the reliance on drugs, prescribed or not, is a major factor in why people go in said direction. And I can tell you FIRST HAND that psychiatrists deliberately diagnose and prescribe ERRONEOUSLY in order to line their pockets and bank accounts with increasing funds, and I hope and pray that lovedbythemanwhohungthemo, who claims to be a student in psychiatry, doesn't fall into that same modality of "treatment" of her patients, or I hope she gets sued for malpractice till the dogs come home. And andertwinsen is SSSOOOOOOO correct in her answer that, if it were just more complete, I'd recommend you give her the 10 points for Best Answer. But then Sam's answer is "on-the-mark" too, and Diana and me both have great answers. Sorry I get so excited/agitated on this subject matter but I worked for over 20 years realizing first hand in a professional setting the truth to what you are saying, and you can't say it in such a setting unless you have unbreachable truth that even lawyers can't rip up, and that profession is about as full of trash as any in the universe. Okay. I'll shut up now. Sorry. God Bless you.

That's not a fair generalization. A lot of people with legit emotional disorders--depression, OCD, anxiety--DON'T turn to pills, even though they often should. It's a sense of embarassment and even some fear, as the side effects can be quite miserable. Many never get properly diagnosed and end up developing destructive problems trying to compensate for it--such as self-medicating or unhealthy thought.
Depression is a legit condition. It is as real as a heart murmur or diabetes. Some docs are quick to throw pills at the problem, but many times, medication is necessary. It's BS to think that a person can wish or think themselves out of depression.
ADDENDUM:
Oh, okay. Well then I have to agree with you and the guy who posted about people being addicted to being sick.

There are people who get lots of power, lots of attention, from being sick.
Haven't you met a person who, over the first hour after meeting you, will describe all their illnesses? They've got biploar 1, bipolar 2, fibromyalgia, Moon's.......
And, they don't want to do anything to help themselves. No, can't exercise, too sick. No, can't fix a horrible marriage, too sick. No, can't get a less stressful job, too sick. No, can't change work habits, job demands me to be stressed out.
What is the payoff for such a "power victim"? Well, they can get anything they want by playing off the sympathies of people around them. If they don't wanna do something, then they're too sick. If they want something, then they need it because of their illness. If you're "mean" to them (which includes doubting them on their illnesses) then you're making them sick... bonus points if they end up on the ER because of you!
I know this sounds mean. However, I've seen tons of it. In such people, "I suffer, therefore I am" is their motto. And, no amount of counseling will help a person who has become addicted to being sick.
Go ahead, flame away, flag me.

It's because we have this strange belief that we have to be happy all of the time. If we are not we are handed a pill and think that it will fix everything.
In some cases mild to moderate depression can be dealt with without medication. Studies have shown in mild to moderate depression exercise to give the same effect as anti-depressants, but to exercise takes a lot of effort to pop a pill takes very little. Plus the drug companies would't make any money.

Nobody is perfect and we live in a crazy world which is getting too complicated all the time.
It reminds me of a quote ..in the 60s people used drugs to attain a crazy world......now people use prozac to deal with a crazy world.
We have to function. We have families, jobs, obligations...we also need money and most people do not have the means to go on retreats, pay psychologists, counsellors or even have the time to relax anymore.
People are stressed out. That is the downside possibly of acquiring more and more and setting your goals too high.

It's partly because people are always listening to their ego; it brings up evidence, using anything as a reason why something is wrong. Nothing is.
Most people's daily life is an insanity... which there is no pill for. They identify with a false sense of who they are... and so they suffer.

Because thats what the doctors tell then. They are so eager to get the kick backs from prescribing drugs, that they kind of jsut put things in peoples heads so they can write a script.

because we're too busy trying to so something we're not.
(well not me) but everyone looks to be "normal" be it mentally or physically, if we're chubby we're called obese if we're slim we're anorexic or balimic, if we don't agree with some one else we're called mental or retarted. all these automatic responces.
what is normal any way well i think normal is the limit of our own personal experiance.
it's just the pressure from the outside world and what other people see them as that makes people run to the doc for some pills.
don't worry i often wonder why myself

The medical companies are advertising some sort of med. for everything you might imagine you have.If they can keep you worried enough you will buy.Doctors are on their kick back list.Every look at your Prescription ?It has the name of the Medicine and co. who makes it.These cost a great deal of money,as do the samples you get.If they get you to buy well, what's the difference if you have ill effects, some meds have almost killed me.I had to hunt and hunt for my M.D to get the dose reduced.
