A puppy has died and the mommy is still trying to care for it. She is licking it and the skin is coming off (disturbing). But when i take the dead pup away from her, she gets up leaving the litter and seems stressed. She won't seem to care for the others except the dead pup. This has been going on for hours now. What should i do?

HI
Take it away she will forget about it soon. Put it in the freezer until you can dispose of it properly.

Remove the Mom and put her outdoors while you are removing the dead pup and don't let her see you. Then place her back with the other pups.Don't leave the dead one in with others as she will eventually eat this pup to clean up te area the live pups are in.Dispose of the dead pup where she can't find.

You need to leave the puppy there, the mother will do what is natural for them. If you remove the deceased, she will ignore the other pups and that could be bad. Or you can try taking the deceased pup out when you let her out for toilet, taking the pup with you. You may want to call your local vet and ask them.

Since she gets upset when you take away the dead puppy, pick up the dead one and one live one, quickly remove the dead one from the area, then return the live one to her. She will be so busy checking out the returned pup that she won't notice that the dead one is still gone.

Take the puppy away and bury it. Shell go back to the litter. If this is her first she's just confused. Sit with her and the pups and encourage her with treats and soft words, she'll be fine.

Ultimatley you have to remove the pup. It's not healthy for the others to be exposed to a dead & decaying animal. Get it out of the house, and out of her scent range. She will eventually have to go back to caring for the others. You've got to put the dead pup in a garbage bag, seal it, & dispose of it properly. ASAP

You should bury it and wait for the mom to get used to the fact that the pup is dead.Even if it hurts you or the moms feelings. And you can't keep a dead dog in your house because that may get a bit supicious to the neighbors or police if they ever need to come to your house.

TIP: the dog might rot if it already hasn't.

you will have to distract her away from the litter then get the dead puppy and buriey it somewhere the mother will still be distressed but she will come out of it in about 1-2 weeks.
