I admit that was a tricky question. Most people would answer: "light" (not the sun, mind you, the sun was created later), but before there was light, what was there? Water? God's spirit? Darkness? Earth? If planet Earth, in what form was it? Did it have earth (i.e. dirt) and water?
Was planet earth the only celestial object? What would Newtonian laws say about earth being the only single object in space?
It was said: God's spirit hovered the waters ... so water was there .... and darkness was over the deep. What exactly was "deep"? Was darkness created, then? Isn't darkness merely the absence of light? Sure, then light was created, but it seems to me that wasn't the first thing God created according to the book of Genesis. Thoughts???

I can't answer all your questions. I don't know who can. But since I believe both the Bible and science: God created light before he created the sun, so there must be another source of light out there before the sun was created.
It's like asking, Where did God live before he created the heavens and the earth? Neither the Bible or science has answered these questions.

According to Colossians 1:15 the spirit being we know as Jesus was the first of God's creation but the book of Genesis only hints at this when it says, "Let us make man in our image..."
