EGAD! Don't go RED!! You are going to hate yourself when you have to repaint them. Hate to say this, but you did things a little backwards. You should have painted the cabinets first and then chosen an appropriate wall color. That said, I would go with an off-white or bright white, depending on the yellow and depending on your style. Red is awfully hard to get used to on cabinets. So if you'er even considering down that path, do just one cabinet door and see how you like it first.

With creamy yellow, you have a lot of options (but it really depends on your appliances..)

White (distressed or not): a perrenial favorite. It's clean looking and is timeless. All other colors can accent it.

Blue (any shade from dark to light): brings to mind os a French or Dutch country kitchen. If you're a Brit (as your spelling of colour suggests) French may not be the way you'd like to go.

Red (from true red to brick) and Oranges: the combo of yellow and either of those colours is what the Americans call "Southwestern" or Europeans might call "Moracan."

Green (true to sage): is a very fresh, clean look that could be enhanced with fresh plants and flowers.

Browns (natural or painted): earthy and my least favorite.

Black: striking contrast; very modern with a 50's twist.

WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T FORGET THE WOODWORD/TRIM AND WINDOWS AS WELL AS EW KNOBS AND DRAWER PULLS. It will tie the whole room together.

Paint your cupboards white and use an antique glaze over the paint. It's really easy. Just paint the cupboards white. Buy an antique glaze (you can click on the link below for instructions) and simply glaze over the white paint. It's very chic in the US, I can tell you're in Europe because of the way you spelled colour (color in the US:). If you want the updated cabinets (you call them cupboards) in a muted antique blue (same application as white), blue is trendy right now, at least in the US. Have fun.

Are the cabinets wood? If they are, I'd sand them down and then stain them to what ever colour you think looks good. My kitchen is a soft yellow and the cabinets are all wood, probably medium oak colour. It looks really good, but then my house is alot older and sometimes newer homes don't have the wood cabinets. If you are going to paint them, i think white is the best, but maybe not a bright white, go with a matte finish.

If you follow the advice of the people who told you to go white, I think you will be pleased with the results. The baseboards, window and door casings would look good in white as well. White used to be used as a main body color with another color used for trim. People have discovered that reversing that trend provides a pleasing and classic look. The white trim "pops" out while providing a very pleasant "framing" effect.

If you are going for a country or French-y look, I would go with like a cornflower blue (think of the crayon). Thats a pretty color combo!

Oooo, I agree with "nu_..." - the Sage Green. That would be beautiful and unique!
