We're using the SOS program for our 6th Grader and 4th Grader and for the most part we're very happy with it. I can't speak to the original version, but I can say in the current version the parent can set how much, if at all, spelling counts on a percentage scale.

In particular I appreciate the inclusion of the many videos, which, obviously, you don't get with a work/textbook only program.

We do supplement with a separate writing program because I don't want my children do be doing everything on computers only.

We tried it at the 4th, 8th, and 10th grade level. For the most part it went un-used after a couple of weeks. It may have improved recently but the first editions where very unforgiving. You could not misspell anything. My kids got much to frustrated with it. We mostly tried the science program.

If you really like doing your work on the computer give it a try for yourself.
