The soul is the reasoning of the person, the spirit is the one that leaves the body,, as the soul lives on forever. They are definitely two different things.

The soul of a person is he himself--entirely!
When Adam was created he was made "a living soul" (Gen. 2:7) Nothing separate put into him.-breath of life meant the air plus the energy spark that made him a living soul. when he died he became a dead soul(person, creature)
*** it-2 p. 1004 Soul ***
SOUL
The original-language terms (Heb., ne´phesh [???]; Gr., psy·khe´ [????]) as used in the Scriptures show “soul” to be a person, an animal, or the life that a person or an animal enjoys.
The connotations that the English “soul” commonly carries in the minds of most persons are not in agreement with the meaning of the Hebrew and Greek words as used by the inspired Bible writers. This fact has steadily gained wider acknowledgment. Back in 1897, in the Journal of Biblical Literature (Vol. XVI, p. 30), Professor C. A. Briggs, as a result of detailed analysis of the use of ne´phesh, observed: “Soul in English usage at the present time conveys usually a very different meaning from ??? [ne´phesh] in Hebrew, and it is easy for the incautious reader to misinterpret..............”
=======
Spirit on the other hand can be several things:
Anything of an invisible nature is and that has force in it---: wind,
gravity, enertia, attitude of a person, party spirit, mob spirit etc.
Then their are spirits , God being the foremost, Jesus is a spirit. Spirit creatures--angels, demons etc.
*** it-2 p. 1017 Spirit ***
SPIRIT
The Greek pneu´ma (spirit) comes from pne´o, meaning “breathe or blow,” and the Hebrew ru´ach (spirit) is believed to come from a root having the same meaning. Ru´ach and pneu´ma, then, basically mean “breath” but have extended meanings beyond that basic sense. (Compare Hab 2:19; Re 13:15.) They can also mean wind; the vital force in living creatures; one’s spirit; spirit persons, including God and his angelic creatures; and God’s active force, or holy spirit. (Compare Koehler and Baumgartner’s Lexicon in Veteris Testamenti Libros, Leiden, 1958, pp. 877-879; Brown, Driver, and Briggs’ Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament, 1980, pp. 924-926; Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, edited by G. Friedrich, translated by G. Bromiley, 1971, Vol. VI, pp. 332-451.) All these meanings have something in common: They all refer to that which is invisible to human sight and which gives evidence of force in motion. Such invisible force is capable of producing visible effects................."
They both are entirely different

According to the definitions which the Bible uses, the soul is the life that a person has or the combination of the physical man and the breath of God. It is mortal and dies when the person dies. The spirit is a part of God that is immortal and goes back to God when a person dies but has no personality from the person whos soul it occupied for a time.

God breathe into man's nostrils the breath of life, and he became a living soul. He opened his eyes, and probably looked around. Soul is your life. When a person dies, the soul goes back to God from whence it came, and the dead no nothing. They don't think, talk, see, they are resting until the return of Jesus Christ. The Spirit is the conscious within you, talking to you. Jesus said when He was leaving this earth that He would send us a comforter which is the Holy Spirit which will bring all things to our remembrance.

Paul calls it ,"body ,soul, and spirit".This is the human trinity.
Your spirit is only awakened when you are Born Again. You are born once by the water(in the womb)your consciousness is your soul. When you accept Jesus, the Holy Spirit of God enters you and wakes up that spirit that has been dead in all since Adam fell. That's why Paul says" those who don't have the spirit cannot fathom the deep things of God".That's why the atheists think it's all nonsense. They couldn't understand it anyway.Sons of Adam are body and soul ,believers are body ,soul and spirit, adopted into the family of God.

Yes, The Bible clearly distinguishes between the spirit and the soul. In conjunction the spirit is always spoken of as the higher and nobler element in man. It is that part of us which gives us common nature with God. (God is spirit (as to his nature), and those who worship Him must worship Him in (the sphere of) the spirit and (in the sphere of) the truth." (John 4:24)
Paul prays: "Now may the God of peace sanctify you ENTIRELY; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete..." (I Thessalonian 5:23)
Here the entire nature of man is depicted as spirit and soul and body.
Hebrews 4:12 reads: "For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of SOUL AND SPIRIT, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart."
Only the Word of God, especially as contained in the Scriptures, is a fine enough instrument to enable us to distinguish the character of our innermost being - whether it is God-like (spirit), or whether it is merely selfish (soul).
The adjective form for the word "soul" appears several times in the New Testament (I Corinthians 2:14; 15:44(twice),46 and James 3:15. It is rendered there in the NASB by the word "natural", and is set in contrast to the spiritual, generally with a negative connotation.
It is this part of the inner man that is to be denied (the soul), so that the spirit may be manfested as the controlling principle in the Christian life (see Romans chapter 8).
Much more can be said, but this gives you an introduction.

The souls of people are the thoughts of God...
When God breathes into his thoughts, they are born baby spirits, and God sends them on their way to be born a redeem person.
Yes they are different, soul is basically the spirits... mind-thoughts
Most people don't realize that our spirit prays to God without our knowledge, because the spirit has a mind of it's own... the soul.

Is your soul you if you are created?
Is your soul you if you are born?
Is your soul you if you are resurrected?
What did God have that he gave you as life of your soul if created, if born, to return so you can be resurrected. Jesus gave evidence Luke 8:50,52,54,55; Eze.37:12-14; What is it by, that there is able to be a resurrection Psm.104:29,30 and every sould has it.
