Basically, the question is: to what extent are security guards expected to lay down their lives for whatever it is they're guarding?

I worked as a security officer for four years. The company I worked for would have fired anyone for risking their lives to protect anything other than another human life. There is no need for a person earning under $10 an hour to risk their lives.

Of course, it depends on the item. A guard can't be expected to put his life down for any old shiz-bang. It's gotta be important. If 100s of people's lives depend on the item, it might be more of a priority. But, it is all a matter of values. Of course, on person may view their life as more important than another person's or the item.

You also must realize that running away to fight another day is a rather sensible idea. Why should the guard waste his life, when he could simple go to the authorities with a description, and put his life to some use instead of letting bravery cloud his better judgement.

So, it depends on the circumstances. The guard, I'm guessing, has a weapon of sorts, so he should put it to good use on a common criminal. But if there is more than one thief, or the thief went through high class security, the guard should probably pull some quick moves or surrender.

Dude.. they're not at all!

A security guard is usually hired to protect someone elses or a company asset.. this is never worth more than one human life!

In my view!

Security is supposed ot be there as a deterrant.. if a thief is crazed enough ot pull a weapon on an armed guard.. then the guard should probably call for backup and slip away.. this would be a smarter thing to do.. because his only other option is kill or be killed!! and either way the guard will end up the biggest looser!! remember that a security guard is not trained ot handle the trauma of watching a man die unlike miltary personell who are well trained for it.. furthermore.. it may turn out the thief was a desperate father trying to feed 5 hungry kids.. then it would be much worse..

if the guard did have ot shoot.. he could go for the leg.. not shoot to kill.. then he would be doing his job 100%

i respect all life..

I would say it depends on the Security Company, and the Contract they have with the Client. In most cases, I would say the guard does not have lay down his/her life for the Clients needs.

My thoughts on this, who the hell cares.. if they fire 'em they are alive to get another underpaid job elsewhere.

It most cases, no, they are not expected to lay down their lives. They are there to show a presense. Just like cops, if someone gets the bead on a cop and disarms him, they dont expect the charge of the light brigade against better armed enemies in a suicided ploy. they expect him to live and try to remember as much as possible so they can gather evidence and get the thief at a later date.

Most of them are told that what they are guarding is not worth their lives.

The company would rather replace the property than face a lawsuit from the relatives of a deceased security guard.

Why would a person making lousy pay put their life on the line just to stop bad guys from stealing money?

Better be fired by your boss than be fired in the chest.
