Let me explain some basic methods of highway patrol, If you stay at the posted speed limit, then you will not see any different vehicles. In order to patrol and observe you have to go faster the the traffic flow. If you go under the speed limit MOST drivers will not pass the marked unit. It is important that the area around changes in order to find violators etc. Further there are a lot of call that require silent runs. so therefore a cruiser exceeding the speed limit might be on a call.Arm chair quarter back one draw back to being a cop.

For starters, how can you say "most cops?" How often have you witnessed this and how do you know for sure that they are speeding without marking them with a radar gun. Imagine your running late for work and the car in front of you is just kinda cruisin at 5 under with no way for you to pass. This is what a police officer feels like every day. They are constantly stuck behind the "Grandpa" driver and no matter what, they cant escape it. As soon as anyone notices a squad in there rear view, they immediatly check there speedometer and slow down. I am a firefighter and work very closley with the police and, believe it or not, they are just normal people like you and I. If this is not a good enough reason for you, how bout this. Remember when you were little and everytime you questioned your parents authority they responded with "because I said so" Its the same thing, Why cant you speed when the police can? because they say so.

When I am on patrol (which is rare-too many calls for service), I actually drive slower than the speed limit. It helps me to see what is going on with traffic, and going down on the street.
If I am responding to a call, then yes, I am going to go faster than the speed limit.
If I were going to a crime in progress and a member of your family was involved, I am sure you would want me to disregard the speed laws.
As for the person who gave you a ticket and you saw speeding to the grocery store parking lot - maybe they were trying to get to a crime scene faster, maybe there was an officer emergency in the store, it could have been anything. Unless you are listening to the police radio, you have no idea what they are going to and what is going on.

Im not trying to say thats cops should be above the law by speeding but I think its not a big deal if cops break the speed limits. Everytime they go to work could be their last day plus they deal with a lot of stress sometimes should they should be given a break as long as their not doing like 90 mph or something.

maybe there was a prob with someone shoplifting in the store so he was speeding to get there! Maybe he was doin security and left for lunch or whatever then they called him to the store that would explain the way he was dressed!
As for turnin on lights then turning them off, maybe he was called for back-up then another officer showed up and told him he could still show up but he didnt have to hurry, therefore he shuts his lights off and drives normal!
There could be a million reasons officers do what they when driving, as long as they do it safely, and able to return home after thier shift that's all that matters

well most police are either going to a call or to the police station.. but if this officer was in plain colthes i would go to the city meeting they have and ask the question there thats why every city has meetings is for the people to know what is going on in there city

Not sure what dept policy is where you are at, but where i came from an officer is docked 2days pay for that. Report the vehicle number and location of the offense and call the internal affairs dept of your local PD. If the officer is not responding to a call (logs will determine that) then he is reprimanded. Make sure you are anonymous so he doesn't try to get even. Though internal affairs tends to keep things hush hush anyway. Good luck!

Think - Use this plan of action - I do. Pull out behind him/her and follow them at the speed they are going (they don't seem to mind). for as long as you are going the same way. I run the interstates often at 80 to 85 following behind a state trooper just going from here to there. Those people in front panic and get out of our way - I love this benefit their breaking of the law provides so let's keep quiet huh.

How do you know that they are not responding to a call for help or a robbery and they have been told no lights and siren? If you call for help, do you want the police officer to drive the speed limit getting to you to help you out? Just asking.
