I am painting a room with stripes on textured walls but the paint keeps bleeding past the tape. Is there something I can use to fix this problem?

I know no one has mentioned this yet...but why would you paint stripes on a textured wall? I would say that might be going a little overboard. If the wall is textured, you need to find a faux finish that works with that, not against it. And striped textured walls are going to look....amaturish and corny. Try giving it a marbled or faded finish instead. Or just paint them a solid brighter color if you need to fancy them up. You are never going to get crisp stripes on a textured wall.

I think you may need to rethink your stripe detail on a textured wall. The paint will naturally get under any tape because on a textured surface, it will adhere to the top of the bumps, leaving little gaps for the paint to seep in and fill the little "pock marks" in the texture under the tape. Only on a smooth surface will you have a chance of the tape sealing off a line cleanly and tight enough not to let paint leak under, and even then it's not always perfect and touch ups are required. A wider tape won't do anything different to the edge, and a stronger adhesive on a tape wil put you at risk of tearing the paint off the texture it's covering, or even tear bits of the texture itself off. The suggestion of using a thicker paint makes some sense because it would be less likely to ooze under the tape, but DON'T add flour to thicken it ! Ask at your paint store for suggestions. There are textured paints available, or texturing agents you can add to paint. This will be thick, less runny, and a texture over a textured wall surface will go on and fill in better.
Now, as for the stripes, you have chosen a crisp, accurate painted design that isn't all that compatable with an uneven surface. I don't know why you are doing stripes, but perhaps a more organic or wispy freehand design is called for. Good luck with your project though, however you complete it..

I have never seen paint that wouldn't bleed past tape. The problem is the wetting agent to allow the paint to spread. If you can reduce it, you will lessen the bleeding. You might try spreading the paint on a piece of board, using a small roller pick up as much of the paint as possible on the roller and roll it on the wall (stripe). The other possibility is to add something to the paint to thicken it. Flour? It might work, Good Luck

You can draw a line with a colored pencil to mark the lines for the stripes.Use a colored pencil in a shade closest to the paint color so you'll see where to paint the stripes.Paint, using a thin brush , so you get a crisp line along the top and bottom edges and then use a small roller to fill in the center of the stripe. And no, you do not have to sand your walls. =)

I also had the same problem with my textured walls, I put 2 inch masking take on instead of painters tape because the painters tape wouldn't stick. The masking tape did stick better, but I haven't repainted yet..but it's something to consider. Good luck.
