I was bitten by a family dog. The painkillers my doctor prescribed are too strong. Is there any over the counter painkiller that works as well as vicodin or percocet?

I was bitten on my finger by a cat last year and it swelled real bad, I had week off work and powerful antibiotics. It was not joke, and if you have any swellling see a doctor or pharmacist (Chemist) at once.

Actually, it is taught in medical schools and is common medical knowledge that a dog's mouth is cleaner than that of a human being. Unless it is a wild dog, where you might run the risk of contracting rabies. In most cases, you're better off being bitten by a dog than any human. With that being said, if you are in pain I'd recommend using aleve. Though, I'd also recommend eating a small snack before doing so, you want to protect your stomach against any irritation.

ps. you will not find a medication that compares to vicodin or percocet over the counter...those are some pretty strong drugs.

EDIT:
i wanted to clarify about the cleanliness of a dogs mouth as compared with a human being.
A clean mouth means one that is less likely to cause disease, consider that germs tend to be species specific. Harmful dog germs are usually harmless for humans, unless we're talking about rabies, a disease that affects dogs and people in equally damaging ways. But generally, humans are immune to most dog germs. Likewise, human germs probably won't harm a dog. But human germs can harm humans, of course. So a bite from a human mouth full of harmful bacteria may very well be more damaging than a dog bite, even if the dog's mouth is full of harmful dog germs.

ask your doctor if there is anything less powerful you can take. I was prescibed percocet for dental surgery but advil (ibuprofen) worked just fine. I also wouldn't start taking any medications (even over the counter ones) without asking a doctor or pharmacist first. By the way are you on antibiotics. I am not a doctor but have worked with animasl long enought to see many bites get nastily infected.

ACTUALLY IT IS AN OLD WIVES TALE THAT DOGS MOUTHS ARE CLEAN. no wonder there are so many incompetent doctors.

before anything else, can i just ask if the dog has rabies shots? did you have your tetanus shots? and some anti-rabies meds? im just asking cause that's the protocol we usually follow.. if you are not comfortable with the pain meds given to you, you should check back with your doc so he can adjust the medicines..
