Yes....has she been trying to make a bed in a dark place? or do you have a whelping bed for her? Keep her in a quiet place, and make sure she has plenty of water. Also, have your vet's number handy in case there is a problem....you don't want to lose the mother due to complications.

Did the vet give her a shot to clear her out when you took her back? That should have been given just in case she had any retained placenta, or even a dead puppy (or another live one for that matter - it has been known for palpation to miss one who is stuck in the pelvic area). Frankly I'd give the vet a call at least because this isn't right for her to be crying/yelping. Her panting etc. could however, be down to the fact it's simply too hot in the whelping box. Do you have a brood lamp on? I have draped a sheet across a third of the box, at the back, so mum can lie in 'shade' while nursing. The temperature in the box should be around 80 - 85F It helps to leave a thermometer on the floor, so you know what the temperature is like down there. I have never fed my bitches 'puppy food' when nursing. That's for puppies (hah). Yes, they have had a good quality food, and perhaps some extra meat, but provided mum has been well nourished during her pregnancy, the extras in puppy food honestly isn't necessary. And I've never had eclampsia in my girls!! Check her teats. Perhaps she's let down her milk too fast - newborn puppies don't actually take that much off mum early days and if she's run into mastitis, that will be painful for her too. Are the puppies okay - nursing and quiet? One indication that things are not right is a noisy, mewling, litter.

The onset of labor is usually accompanied by heavy panting, pacing, and “nest building” behaviors. The dog may whine throughout the process, shriek at the birth of each puppy, or be completely silent. When hard labor starts, the contractions become more severe. The dam’s panting will escalate a bit, and she may “hunch” over and/or lift her tail with each contraction. Just before the birth of each pup, you’ll see the puppy as a “bulge” just under the dam’s tail.

The "panting" can come and go; some dogs experience "false labor" days before the pups are actually born.

About 12 to 24 hours before the birth, the dam’s temperature may drop a couple of degrees. If her normal temperature is, say, 101°, it may drop to about 99° or 98°. The only way you’ll know if her temperature is dropping, of course, is if you regularly take her temperature. Twice a day – once in the morning and once in the evening dur-ing the latter part of her pregnancy – is usually sufficient.

She is probably close. I would offer her some water but do not push it. She is probably going through some of the labor pains and this is hurting her. Do you notice her tummy quivering up and her sides jumping. If so those are contractions. Make sure she is in a safe place that will be warm so the puppies will be ok. Good luck

Thats the first sign but it could take up to 24 hours after the panting begins, if you let her out to go potty take her out on the leash, a lot of first time mom's might think they have to potty when really it is a puppy coming..

not knowing how long your dog has been in labor, i would say, dogs take quite a while to have puppies. my dog had 10 and it took her 4 hours for the first and 10 hours for the whole litter.
the puppies have to move in to the birth canal from multiple places. be paition and they will come.

good luck!!!

Oh yeah...it could be anytime now! My dog just had puppies and that is one of the first signs of their labor. She might also start scratching at the ground really hard...that helps for the pain. The only thing you can do is wait now or if you can get her into her whelping box and try to comfort her....good luck!
