Competing memes, basically. Any viable religion meme will have exclusion principles. There are some niche religions that are more inclusive, but since they do not exclude competing ideas they hold on to a smaller percentage of the global population.

Ancient peoples worshipped many gods. The Hebrews - later known as Jews -- were the first people to accept the fact that there was just one God. This was made known to them by God himself.

The first commandment is a warning not to go back to those days of polytheism.

It was a combination of just plain false gods and demonic realm that did and does terrorize certain parts of the world.Isaiah said in essence,"You cut down a tree, you use part of it to build your house ,part of it to heat your food ,carve and decorate part of it and fall down and worship it.What's wrong with that picture?"(my translation)Yet there was plenty of sacrificing to ,as Paul said,So-called gods and Demi-gods.These were the Demonic realm.Jesus and His apostles encountered many of those cases, and sent them straight to the Abyss.Daniel in his book talks about these powers behind some of the worlds thrones. There is a whole other dimensional world out there.

Refers to the idols and false gods of the day. Remember originally this is/was a Hebrew text. Only later a Christian document. Also in older writings from the Jewish faith it is stated that before the creation God (Jehova) cast down old gods in order to cleanse the soon to be born universe. So in order to make all that there is...genocide had to be comitted.

It is referring to idolatry. Any deity or thing that is worshipped besides the one true God are other Gods. Also loving any thing in this world that you love more than God is also. There are many people who believe in a all forgiving God that didn't make a hell and is sending everyone to heaven. This is another example of idolatry. Just believing in a God other than the God of the Bible is idolatry.

What does God forbid in the First Commandment ? God forbids me to have other gods or idols. Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him alone, shalt thou serve.

He who commits open idolatry who worships something else than God and bows down to sun, moon, stars, images or saints. These are the other gods you are wondering about. Good Question !

Nimrod, Noah's great grandson and his wife Semiramus and their son Tammuz started the pagan gods and goddesses religions. Noah's son Ham saw his father's nakedness and Ham's grandson Canaan was cursed for it. The Canaanite mythology went back to the flood and it was said that Semiramus spawned many gods and goddesses, Ashtaroth, Diana, Venus, Aphrodite, Zoar, Zeus, Baal, Ishtar, Astarte and many, many other names. They made stone and wood idols for their pagan gods and goddesses and gave them different jobs, i.e. fertility, sun, moon, rain, water, fire, love, bull, etc. These are just some that I am mentioning from the Bible. It is said that Muhammad picked out the god Allah from 360 idols and Allah was the crescent moon god.

Anything you worship and hold above the true God. Remember the Lord Jesus Christ died for your sins. 1 Corinthians 3: 3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? 1 Corinthians 3: 4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?
