i have a 320GB hdd and a 160Hdd i want to compleatly back up my 320 on to my 160 (and have a gig or two spare) for free, how can i do this and will windows still run when i restore it or will i have to re-activate it?

norton save and restore claims to be able to do this but it costs $50US which is $50 more then my budget for this.

If you have no more than 150 gigs of data on your large drive, you can ghost it to the 160. If either drive is a maxtor, you can do it with the maxblast software. Just copy the source drive to the destination drive. You may also want to install a program called BootUS on both drives. This will create a MBR on both drives and if you run into problems, its a simple matter of booting to the small drive and recopying to the large. Your windows will run exactly as before. no keys or registration needed.

Good Grief!! Backup a 320GB to a 160Gb. Even using the most extreme compression, I know of no program that can do this. If someone knows better and can post the name of that program, we will both be learning something ... sorry I couldn't help. :(

If you have that much data, you might be better off having two or more hard drives running as mirrors.

How about good old-fashioned Copy and Paste?

If in fact you want to copy 320g to 160g, you will have to zip.
