The following link will take you to a chart offering information on the earliest and most recommended ages for purchasing a pet in each state.

Most puppies should be at least 8 weeks old before being removed from their mother. However in some cases, it is necessary to remove them sooner. I brought my puppy home at 5 weeks old, but she was completely weened and I had a 2 year old female that "adopted" her and taught her manners as normally the mother would. Under normal situations, I wouldn't have brought a puppy home this early, however I knew I was in a situation to provide the necessary training that she would be missing. In addition, all of the many breeders I talked to recommended this early age for this particular breed.

Hope the chart helps...

I'm unaware of the youngest age for buying or obtaining a puppy in NY, but here in Australia, it is generally around the 7- 8 week period as the pups need their mother and others in the litter up until then. The youngest I ever bought was an 8 week old labrador, and he was the apple of our eye for almost 17yrs.Have 3 small dogs now,but the many years of love and adoration from the lab, were some of the happiest memories I shall ever have.He was put to rest On Easter Saturday last year.Good luck in finding your puppy!!!!

I think that the minimum age to buy a puppy anywhere is 8 weeks old. But, I'm not sure if the age is different in NY.

The absolute youngest age is after the puppy has completed it's 7th week but preferably 8 weeks.

You should really buy a puppy when it's 10 weeks old, just because all of the puppy shots should be done by that age and you can also test out the temperment of the puppy.

Most places have laws in place that puppies must be at least six weeks old. Some places even go as high as eight weeks. I personally wouldn't get a puppy younger than eight weeks, as they are still very dependent on mom for a lot of life lessons at that age.

You shouldn't buy a puppy anywhere unless it is AT LEAST 7 weeks old....preferably 8-10 weeks.

The very best time to separate a pup from the litter is on the 49th day (7 wks). Get a copy of 1 of Richard A Wolters books ("Family Dog, Water Dog or Gun Dog") & you will discover the reasons.

Breeders can not sell puppies until 8 weeks of age or they can lose their license to sell!
