Circumcision is a surgical procedure which consists in cutting some or all of the foreskin (prepuce) from the penis. The frenulum may also be cut away at the same time, in a procedure called frenectomy. The word "circumcision" comes from Latin circum (meaning "around") and caedere (meaning "to cut").

It is part of the Jewish tradition and is performed on an 8 day old boy in a ceremony called a Brit milah. The commandment to circumcise is given at Gen. 17:10-14 and Lev. 12:3. The covenant was originally made with Abraham. It is the first commandment specific to the Jews.

In the New Testament it states:

"Was anyone called while circumcised? Let him not become uncircumcised. Was anyone called while uncircumcised? Let him not be circumcised.

Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing, but keeping the commandments of God is what matters."

I Corinthians 7:18-19

So according to the New Testament you don't have to be circumcised to have a covenent with God, but since Jews do not believe in the New Testament most uphold the tradition of circumcision, although lately some rabbi have questioned it's significance.

I hope that helps. It is a touchy subject because a lot of people believe circumcision is a violation of human rights as the babies aren't given a choice in the matter, whereas others have it done for cosmetic reasons and believe it can have some health benefits.

Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis. In the Jewish tradition, it was done as a sacrifice.

The foreskin is not "extra" skin, any more than the labia are "extra" for a woman. It has several important functions. It is very sexually sensitive, and men who are circumcised have less sensation.
Circumcision was once conventional, almost routine, in our country -- we are the only country in the world where it has been done routinely for non-religious reasons.

There is no medical reason for circumcision. Unless for religious reasons, it is strictly cosmetic surgery.
It is a myth that it is cleaner and healthier.
In poor countries where there is a lot of HIV and people do not have access to condoms, it can reduce the rate of HIV transmission. But it does not prevent it.

The more we learn about how circumcision can permanently effect a man, the less people are doing it to their babies.

Circumcision cuts or otherwise removes some or all of the foreskin (prepuce) from the penis. The frenulum may also be cut away at the same time, in a procedure called a frenectomy. The word "circumcision" comes from Latin circum (meaning "around") and caedere (meaning "to cut").

Circumcision predates recorded human history, with depictions found in stone-age cave drawings and Ancient Egyptian tombs.[1] The origins of the practice are lost in antiquity. Theories include that circumcision is a form of ritual sacrifice or offering, a sign of submission to a deity, a rite of passage to adulthood, a mark of defeat or slavery, or an attempt to alter aesthetics or sexuality.[2] Circumcision of males is a religious requirement of the Islamic and Jewish faiths.[3][4] It is also practiced by the majority of South Koreans,[5] Americans, and Filipinos.[6]

Infant circumcision has come under increasing discussion in recent decades. The American Medical Association states that medical associations in the US, Australia, and Canada do not recommend routine “non-therapeutic” circumcision, which it defines as the non-religious, non-ritualistic, not medically necessary, elective circumcision of male newborns.[7] According to the AMA's 1999 literature review, in the US when parents choose elective circumcision for their child, it is largely because of social or cultural expectations, rather than medical concerns.[7] However, a 2001 survey questionnaire found that 23.5% of parents listed 'health reasons'.[8] Proponents of genital integrity condemn all elective infant circumcision, religious or secular, as a form of male genital mutilation that they consider comparable to female genital mutilation.[9] Some argue that there are medical benefits in the procedure.[7][10] Circumcision may be needed to treat chronic inflammation of the penis, and penile cancer.[10] Some physicians recommend circumcision to treat phimosis, while others recommend the other effective treatments for this condition.[

circumcsion is the cutting off of the foreskin on the penis.
it is a jewish rite/ ceremony called the brit milah and it performed on the 8th day of the baby boy's birth. it's a really big deal.
usually the grandfather or godfather holds the child while the moleh (pronounced) mole performs the cutting. he is specially trained and blessed by the rabbi( or whoever trains them)
there is a big party afterwards!
so, the rest of the gentile world did not start performing this rite until sometime in the 1940- 50s when (probably some jewish doctor suggested it to his gentile patients) .
it is totally unneccessary but some people believe that it keeps the penis cleaner. however, there is no concrete evidence to suggest this and now in the 21st century, more parents are opting not to have it done to their boys ...if they are not jewish, of course!

When little boys are born they ask if the want them circumsized. It means to take the extra skin (that all boys are born with) off. They cut it off and make a head to the penis. It might be a Jewish thing but a lot of people have it done to their kids.

Circumcision is not pertinent solely to religious direction as to whether a child has a circumcision or not, but in Jewish tradition in rite of passage, it is referred to as Briss, which involves more than just surgical procedure.

In procedures by doctors, the fore-skin is placed into a tubular like apparatus, as it is then clamped by such, then with a motion of part of this apparatus, the "cutting device" makes its full circumference around the fore-skin of the shaft, whereby removing the extra skin that would have extended well over the Corona, if this procedure had not taken place.

permit's be clean right here: circumcision isn't a mandatory technique. There are no longer from now on wellbeing dangers in no longer circumcising and truly, is a organic and significant part of the penis....with various of nerve endings, thank you. particular, you're able to offer anesthesia and soreness meds, and your son could be high quality. yet my question is, why could you? that's painful, regardless of meds and maybe a newborn does no longer remember it, although that's stressful. How do all of us understand what which skill later in existence emotionally, bodily and sexually? As for the argument of "looking" like the father or different young babies, i think of you will discover that further and further families are choosing to no longer circumcise considering that reason isn't sturdy adequate. Frankly, i understand very few families at this element who've circumcised. Circumcision grew to grow to be familiar interior the US as the thank you to avert masturbation (it extremely is genuine- look it up-did no longer artwork very properly, did it?) and that i do no longer think of we are honoring our boys, our sexuality, and our bodies by skill of persevering with to assist the prepare of it. Please evaluate that a number of the international would not circumcise their infant boys, and that's my wish that at final that's going to be seen a technique stored purely for the uncommon case of necessity. in spite of everything, it extremely is not that diverse from the prepare of removing a woman's clitoris, and that's against the regulation, properly. Why then could the controversy of circumcision be no longer as severe? that's a man or woman's physique we are talking approximately, and that man or woman does have rights, infant or no longer. My element: think of and understand approximately what you're doing, fairly than subscribing to what the norm has been.
