Hello. Me and my boyfriend have been going out for almost two years and we are very close.I recently got an internship in a city that is about 30 minutes away. My car is in the shop, so I won't be able to drive to work until about three weeks. I am only scheduled to go to the internship for two days a week, and to alleviate the problems of someone having to drive to and from work, I am going to catch the bus there, which only requires him to give me a ride back from work only twice a week. Since he drives an SUV he wants me to give him $20 a week to pay for gas, which is $60. I feel like since we have been together for a while and since I am his girlfriend he shouldn't have to charge me gas money for a favor, since he is a working college student himself. He is very angry at me for not wanting to give him $20, I said I would give him half of that, because gas is only $1.90. I don't feel obligated to give my b/f gas money in this situation however he is angry and wants me to pay

this is definitely a favor being that friends schedules aren't matching up. I am a full time college student and have to commute to the internship. I am taking a bus to get there which is $3 each time (two times a week), so I give him the $20, it will cost me about $26.00 a week. He has the same amount of money as me and he works at school. He even asks for gas money when we go back home from school, and we both live in the same area. I never said I won't give him any money but I feel charging your girlfriend $20.00 a week is a bit much.

And yes the gas money is for the extra miles. The internship is little over thirty miles away. He says 20 isn't asking for much because he will have to cover costs, however it's like I'm paying him for a favor. When I ask him to take me to the same city to go to the mall (I didn't have access to a car)..he asked for gas money to go there also. He goes "that's gas money"

Meet him half way with the gas money.Gas money is something stupid to argue about. He is doing you a favor because he loves you.In my opinion it should be 50/50.

If he's really getting angry about something like that is he really the one for you? There might just be some underlying reason that he needs the money for, but for now I would just arrange some other type of transportation if you can, a friend or a relative, or a few different ones so it's not too much of a favor for one person to do for you.

Well, I say you could talk to him about it and try not to get angry and tell him just to listen to what you have to say. Tell him that you think since you're so close you don't really feel like you should have to pay him for a favor. If he still doesn't change his mind, i would just pay him because i dont think its really worth getting in a big fight about, and also if you ever ask for something like that from him then he wont be able to tell you that you didnt help him when he needed it.

Is the twenty dollars based on how many miles he'll have to drive extra to do what you need to have done? Ten dollars at ten miles to the gallon will cover quite a few miles.
So what about this internship doesn't he like? Sounds very much as though he resents your internship.

Well if hes not able to pay for the extra gas himself, I can see why hes asking for money, but if he can pay for it, then there should be no reason why you should have to give him anything. This is something both of y'all have to work out together if you plan on staying together. Dont ever let money get inbetween both of y'alls relationship. Just think of it this way, if you were driving your car, you'd be paying for gas yourself, so $20 really isnt that much.

What a jerk!! I mean I dont know your situation or his, he might be broke. But for him to get angry for not giving exactly the amount he asked is just rude. I dont know about this guy he treats you like one of his guy friends. Just give him the $60 if you really need a ride from him. But remember he is going to need you one day, then you can turn the tables on him.

I don't think there is a simple right vs wrong in this situation. However, if you two can't work something out, with such a small issue, I do hope you aren't planning to marry anytime soon.

you are the begger cause you need the ride. It would not surprise me that that is about what it costs him extra for gas not including wear and tear. I question your relationship cause he should be willing to do it for you out of love I question you cause you make a big issue out of twenty bucks a week.
