My computer, used, came without the software disks/cds. The OS needs to be reloaded. Of course, stores and probably Microsoft too only offer more up to date software which I am unsure that my computer can handle. Buying a new computer is not an option at the moment.

To clear something up: Vista is not a terrible operating system. Vista is a blanket system, meaning that all modern windows computers are outfitted with it - even ones that shouldn't be. For example, I bought a laptop with 1GB of RAM, with vista, and it was absolutely terrible. Yet my desktop, which has 4 gigs of RAM and an ATI 4870, used to run vista 64 bit and it was beautiful, functioning flawlessly. Vista is far to often thrown onto machines with incapable hardware to run it in the way it was meant to be run. Now I run the windows 7 evaluation, and it's the best OS i've ever used. Moving on though. Everyone's right about your hardware. A machine running '98 is bound to be outdated and would perform poorly under a newer OS. I suggest buying a new machine (which will most likely have vista) and to be SURE that it's hardware will allow vista to perform nicely. Minimum 2 or 3 gigs of RAM. Make sure it has a nice video card and an intel core 2 duo or AMD X2, at the minimum. You could do this, or wait until the end of summer for windows 7 to come out.
