I don't know how old I am, I though I was keeping track, but I lost a year. A real parent isn't a matter of biology, its a matter of caring, showing up, yelling at you when you do something stupid, teaching you how to fish, or drive, or hold your breath underwater, even if you're scared. He's a real parent if you know that after he yells at you he'll bail you out. If he gets mad when you break curfew and you can see the worry, heck, if he cares enough to have a curfew for you.
Even if he doesn't fit the bill as best parent ever, hes doing the best he knows how, that's all any of us can do.

Tell him when it is.and how old you are now. You will discover as you get older and a little more experienced that your Dad fits right in with the average male in this respect. Of course it's a real parent! Is he there for you when you need something? Can you rely on him to listen to you when you have a question about something? Are you fed, clothed, loved and have a roof over your head? Many times, we may have a tendency to focus on issues that, although meaningful to us, may not be to a busy parent. Forgive their lapse in memory and be generous of spirit. If this is an issue for you, start reminding him a little before your birthday.
Good luck

Men suck at that sort of thing. My dad could never remember how old I was either. My husband has to ask me off and on how old HE is, 'cause he can't remember. Women are much better at the detail stuff like that.

If your Dad is paying attention to you and is supportive, then he IS trying. Mine died a couple years ago, and I miss him loads. So do me a favor and try to enjoy the time that you have with yours.

Of course it's irritating and annoying, but come on! He's still your dad and I'm sure he has many good qualities. Don't let this small one override all the other positive ones.

Try to be big-hearted about it. If he's been a good, non-abusive, caring, concerned father in most other ways, then try to overlook this one small thing. Notice I said "small," even though it probably hurts and irks you, it is relatively small in the bigger scheme of things!!

It's a parent, maybe not a nice one, but still a parent. Parents you don't choose, you have to learn to live and deal with them. Don't expect your father to remember those things, it will hold you from some more disappointments. I hope you have a nice mother who is emotionally there for you. And that whenever you become a parent, you understand that those things like birthday are major important for your child.

men are imfamous for forgetting important dates. i have to remind my father of my birthday, remind him to send cards on my siblings birthdays...don't worry about it. Just drop him some clues, like a list of things you want for a present, before the day comes.

yes.

I can't remember anyone's B-day. but I'm everyone's best friend and the favorite uncle of my 13 odd' nieces and nephews.. it's a small detail. ask him for money to go to Hawaii. and stop whining over the small crap.

just because he doesn't remember your b-day doesn't mean he is not your father. some men have a problem remembering dates as important as they are. try not to take it personally, make sure he writes it down on a calendar or something so he won't forget next year.
