Frist see if their is anything that you can do to save it, don't just kill him? Also, don't just listen to one vet. Some aren't RIGHT!! Is there a Humane Society around wher you live?? Take him there.

It's a little late to be trying things, but until you get to the vet, here are two things that might help.

1. Asprin, baby for dogs under 50# and half a regular for bigger ones, will help ease pain.
2. Chondroitin is safe for dogs in most cases, but do some research to see how much, how often, and if there are any reasons not to try it.

My husband's sixteen year old mutt had to be put down, and it was incredibly painful. However, the dog was laboring for breath and going to die soon, regardless of what we did.

The vet will probably want to x ray the area to actually see what is wrong. From the tiny bit of information you've given us, it could be anything. There are several common options: hip dysplasia, arthritis, broken bone, cartiledge damage, or osteoporosis. As old as your dog is, I would personally put my dog down if it were any of these except arthritis or a hairline fracture. I'd try the asprin/chondroitin routine first for arthritis, and see if his mobility improves. A hairline fracture should still heal properly.

Most importantly, talk to your vet and give his (or her) recommendations the greatest weight.

First you need to find out what is going on with him before just jumping right to killing him! It may be something the vet can fix. Only euthanize if the quality of life isn't fair to the dog and there is no chance of recovery.

That's mean! ask the vet and see what she says!A dog can live up to 16 yrs and maybe a little more!let it live it's life as long as it can! Just prey and wish it isn't anything serious!

you need to see what the vet says is the matter with him because he will be sure to make a recommendation as to whether or not he needs to be put to sleep especially if he thinks that your pet is really suffering.

maybe the vet would be a better source of information and guidance than yahoo! Answers. i suspect most of your answers will tell you to croak him, but none of those people have seen him and the vet will have. Anyway, if it was my dog, I'd save the vet bill and just croak him.

Maybe he has bad arthritis. Give him a baby aspirin now and take him to the vet.

oh god, i could just cry thinking about it. my dog suffers with the same thing (old english sheepdog) It would probably be the best thing to have your dog put to sleep so the pain will stop, but its a hard thing to do and Im not sure I would be strong enough to face that one. good luck
