I recently changed my dogs food from Science Diet to a much richer food with no fillers. I gradually changed over to the new in a 10 day period. All of a sudden her poop has a terrible odor. Is this normal when you change to a better quality of food?

It was very good that you changed gradually. Most people don't know to do that. And yes, changing food can change the color, consistancy and smell of their stool. It isn't bad, it just means that the new food has different ingredients. If you can tolerate the smell i would keep her on the new food.

Usually it doesnt get smellier, but in fact changing from a lower quality food to a higher can change amount and smell will lesson. However it will take the dog several weeks to adjust to the formula change. It could be upsetting the bacterial flora in the guts and intestine. As long as she is not having any other reaction to the food change, other than the bad poop smell. Give it a 2 weeks. If the smell doesnt get better, then she may not be able to digest this formula properly. Science Diet isnt low quality but does have corn in the ingredients. Sometimes changing over to rice or barley will give it a diffrent odor but not a bad one.

You might want to add a few spoons of pumpkin pie filling and a few of plain yogurt to your dogs food. It's good for their digestion.
This could be a temporary thing, but consider also if you have given the dog any other food or treats that are new that could be causing it.

actually you did the right thing by changing it gradually, but, yes, depending on the ingredients and and the fact that maybe it does'nt agree with her for some reason it very well could be causing the problem,if her previous food did'nt cause any problems and you are able to ,you should switch her back, good luck.

Yes. it is part of the process of the digestive system and is a result of the new dies clearing out more impurities from the animals system. Once the majority of impurities are cleared out the smell should lessen, if not disappear enitrely.
