When i lived in New York in the 1970s, the Macdonald's commercial included a jingle which went " Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a sesame-seed bun" and if you sang it correctly at a Macdonald's outlet, you got one for free. Incidentally, a dill pickle is the same thing as a gherkin, but a great deal bigger.

I've never heard of gherkins on McDonald's burgers, mine have always had dill pickle slices. That sounds like a taste sensation though.

Ever since they've had outlets in this country the Gherkin has been on the hamburger and the quarter pounder.

McDonalds has always used the same kind of pickle on their main burgers, but some advertise a dill pickle.

Long before the previous answerer's 1990 claim. As long back as I remember - you need something to give it some flavour.
