i heard that cell phones are now allowed at basic training (at least at ft jackson) and are allowed to be used in free time. can anyone verify this?

They are not allowed. If you bring one, it will be secured along with ALL other personal items (civilian clothes, etc.) until after graduation. At that time it will be given back to the individual. However, if the Soldier becomes a holdover for a follow-on school, such as Airborne School, it's at the Drill Sergeants' discretion to allow cell phones. After all, they are still graduates of Basic Trng.

A few months ago there was an article in the Army Times that they were going to start allowing them but only for certain MOS's. (I don't remember which month but it's been in the past year and was the front page article.) Something was said about they had to do it because the recruits now are used to having certain things (or something to that effect) Anyway I'm not sure if they actually allowed this (which in my opinion they absolutely should NOT) You'd need to ask a recruiter because they could tell you who is and isn't allowed to bring them.

Not Allowed.

My son is in basis/AIT right now and cell phones are banned.

someone is lieing, you can bring your phone, but the battery has to be seperated, and it will be locked up so you cannot use them
