No question about it. The SAS (founded by David Sterling). Began life as The Long Range Desert Group(founded 3 July 1940) during World War 2. Their objectives were to collect intelligence and cause massive disruption behind enemy lines using the minimum of troops. Before this no other country in the world had anything like it.The SAS were the ones who discovered that the optmum number of troops to use in a covert operation was a minimum of 4 (Cross trained)men. They some times use 6 or 8 men teams though depending on the op.

On 24 March, 1923, the 16th Pursuit Group was authorized on the inactive list. However, it was not until December 1, 1932 that it was activated in the Panama Canal Zone and served as part of the defense of the canal well into World War II. The designation changed in 1939 to the 16th Pursuit Group (Interceptor) and to the 16th Fighter Group in 1942 before the unit was disbanded on November 1, 1943. The original 16th flew a variety of aircraft consisting of the P-12, P-26, P-36, and beginning in 1941, the P-40. The group earned the World War II American Theater campaign streamer.
General Henry H. (Hap) Arnold coined the term "Air Commando" in early 1944. This term referred to a group of Air Corps personnel established in India to support British long-range penetration forces in Burma. Its lineage began with the highly secret Project 9, the organizing and recruiting stages in the United States. Project 9 became the 5318th Provisional Group (Air) in India, which airlifted British General Orde Wingate’s Special Forces into Burma during Operation THURSDAY in March 1944. Before the end of the month, it had changed, in name only, to the 1st Air Commando Group (1 ACG). The men of this all-volunteer unit established the high standards of innovation, ingenuity, courage, and resourcefulness to which air commandos have looked ever since.

The best special forces units? The British SAS is by far the cream of the crop for any special forces. The oldest is actualy the Rangers-first commanded by Col Robert Rogers in the 1750's, predating the American revolution, and was considered the first special recon elements. Any Ranger can tell you that. The British Marines were not considered "special" just an elite military unit.

The longest serving 'special forces' unit I know of are the US Rangers. They were originally part of the British Army in the American Colonies and seem to have been formed well before the War of Independence. You can find out more about them at their website.

The SAS was formed during WW2, so too the SBS and Commandos.

The British SAS and SBS are the original SF groups and recognised as the best SF in the world.

The American Delta Force was created in 1977 by Charles Beckwith after he had spent some time with the SAS. Beckwith was so impressed, he begged the US military to copy the UK.

The US SF groups are quite good, but their track record isn't a patch on the SAS/SBS. In Iraq, the SAS and SBS are seen as the elite forces.

Got to be the Green Berets. Dates back to Korean War in 1953-1957. I'm not sure if we've had any before then.

Also Rangers have were used in World War 2 to fight Germany. Not really a special forces though, more like a suped up infantryman.

Get over yourselves americans. The SAS and SBS date back to WW2. They are officially the oldest special forces units on earth and this is undisputed. The rangers arent even classed as special forces but as elite units. The Royal Marines are more special forces than the US army Rangers aswell as being a damn site better. Royal marines are the best non special forces unit on earth and the SAS and SBS are the oldest and best special forces units on earth being formed within a year of each other during WW2
