I doubt that everyone up North hates grits. They simply aren't as common as in the South and the name alone is off-putting. Would you want to eat anything you had never tried before with a name like grits? It brings to mind all that expensive dental work being ruined in the space of one breakfast, as if you were eating beach sand. I've tried them and they're bland and flavorless. You've got to doctor 'em up with tons of butter and sugar to make them palatable. Grits are and will always be a local dish.
And no-one with a good education in the North thinks for one minute that all Southerners are rednecks or hillbillies. That is a fallacy and one which you perpetuate yourselves by raising its attention. I've lived in Massachusetts for most of my life and have never met anyone that I didn't like, regardless of where they originated, unless they were @ssholes to begin with, north, south, east or west. Most folks are just like you and I. Plain and ordinary. A bit like grits.

I have found that many people up north simply have never had grits. Some don't even know what grits are. So, I don't think that a large number of northerners "hate" grits they just don't know about them.
Yes, many people think that southerners are rednecks and hillbillies. You may not be either but some are. But there are rednecks and hillbillies up north too. The entire idea of southerners being that way is simply a stereotype.

Hey I know what grits are and I'm from the north. Grits are OK. Not my first choice to eat with breakfast though.
As for the rednecks and hillbillies, I do believe you can find those type of people just about anywhere you go. I know lots of rednecks up here in the great white north.

I'm from as North as you can get (Canada) and can honestly say I don't think I've ever had good grits. I think that makes all the difference -- if I were to try authentic, Southern grits made by someone who's been doing it for a while, or someone using the recipe their great, great grandmother passed down... i'd probably like them.
Why not offer to make some for a Northern friend of yours to show them what REAL good grits are like?!

I love southerners, esp southern girls. Me, I am from NY and I always wanted to go to the south, down to Texas, KC New Orleans and try all of the food, esp the grits!!!. I would luv to try the grits where are you from?
My friends all dont like rednecks, but those are the dumb, smelly, rude southerners that drink cheap beer and watch NAscar.

I'm in the north and I like grits. It's a southern thing, so that's why most northerners don't like them or have never heard of them. My mom grew up in the south and my family still lives there. I don't make fun of them.

I grew up liking oatmeal and you grew up liking grits now tell me which is better. Its what we learn to like. There are rednecks in the south, I live here and have met a few. The best way to answer your question is to ask one, Define what a redneck is!

We don't hate them. We just don't eat them as much they do in the south. Many restaurants offer grits on their menus here and I love them. But up north, we seem to be more potato people.. hash browns, fried potatoes, scalloped, au gratin.. yum.
