i am a breeder of dogs,i have never shipped a dog nor have i bought a dog and had it shipped to me as i have never wanted to cause any undue stress to the animal, but recently i have considered shipping my puppies,do you think this is unwise, and unsafe for the puppy,i know a lot of breeders do this and have no problems at all but i have always been concerned for the animal's safety

I'm with you. I know a lot of people do ship animals but personally, I would never be comfortable with it. I worry about how the animal will handle being shipped like that, it would have to be stressful on them. I can't imagine! I won't judge others for doing it, it's just not something I would be comfortable doing.

No offense, but you should really ask your questions elsewhere. Just about anything in reference to buying a dog not from a shelter will get you cursed or sworn at around here. Trust me I know first hand. I haven't had a dog shipped but just make sure you check with the Better Business Bureau and see if the breeder is on the list for something. The biggest thing to worry about is not the puppy on the plane but who is sending you this puppy and if they are not scamming you. However, this is the risk you take but shipping shouldn't be a big deal for the pup. He will probably be so happy to get out and see a friendly, loving face that he will soon forget he was on a plane for a few hours. Good luck with the research.

Both of my dogs were shipped from MO to me in CA (same breeder 4 years apart) with no problems whatsoever. The airlines have strict regulations on time of year dogs can be shipped due to temperature and weather conditions. I always go straight to the baggage counter to collect the dog and ask for a list of any other animals on the flight just in case the vet needs to know later. Advise the buyer NOT to put a puppy on the ground at a public airport even if they soil their vari-kennel because germs, bacteria and viruses like parvo from all over could be on the ground and in the soil or parking areas. Have them bring bottled water to re-hydrate the pup asap and be sure to send a package of whatever type of food you have been feeding to get them through the adjustment period. Should be fine if everyone is careful. Check with breeders who ship to see what other pitfalls might be.

I have shipped dogs from Canada to U.S. and had dogs shipped to me from the U.S. - quite a few with never a problem. Without exception, the dogs (some puppies, and a couple of adults) were their normal selves by the next day at the latest.

Aren't you concerned about who you sell your puppies to? Every responsible breeder I have met has given prospective buyers an interrogation before selling them a dog, and will frequently call to check on the animal. How can you do that if you are essentially selling a dog by mail order?

Your concerns are definitely warrented. If their crates are mishandled during shipping the animal can die. If you really feel it's necessary to ship them your best bet is to talk with other breeders who handle dogs of the same or similar type as your's to find out who they trust to ship properly. Personally, I would not ship them nor would I purchase an animal that needed to be shipped to me.

I can name 6 people that lost or very nearly lost a dog during a flight. That is enough for me. I will NEVER ship a dog and shipping a puppy is VERY risky.

Reputable breeders do not ship their dogs. Especially dangerous during the winter and summer months.

I shipped my 8 year-old Bull Terrier Staffordshire on the same flight as mine from U.S. to Central America. It can be stressful and occasionally injuries do occur, as do thefts, but it was worth the risk to me to have him with me. Some airlines are more pet safety conscious than others.
