I don't have much cooking experience and have never cooked a steak before. I have a 1.5 pound piece of "London Broil" which is about 1 1/4 inches thick.

I have read that you can cook steak in many ways, but I only have a gas-stove, an oven, and a toaster oven to work with.

Which method should I use? How long should I cook it for? At what heat level?

Any advice is appreciated - thanks a lot!

for basic london broil success...very hot pan...let meat sit out for 15-20 minutes before to take the chill off. olive oil or veg oil...not butter it will burn at this heat..depending on thickness...4 1/2 to 5 mins. per side. let rest 5 minutes. slice thin and against the grain for service. (grain is the lines in the meat, if they run north-south, cut east-west). think about a marinade also. helps in the tenderizing.

LONDON BROIL STEAK

2 cans cream of mushroom soup
1 env. Lipton onion soup

Using a 13 x 9 inch pan, or larger if needed, line the pan with pieces of aluminum foil folded to make a seal. Foil should be long enough to fold loosely over meat forming a cooking bag.
Place meat on foil. Combine cream of mushroom soup and onion soup. Pour over meat, covering completely. Close the foil at the top and sides to form a sealed cooking bag. Bake at 350 degrees for 2-2 1/2 hours. Slice with electric knife. Serve with its gravy.
This is very good. I serve it creamed mashed potatoes and green beans.
Hope this helps..

you can marinade and cook to the medium rare stage or if you want it cooked more to the well side I would braise it. season and brown in a heavy skillet or electric skillet and then dump a can of diced tomatoes on it and add a cup or two of beef broth, bring to a boil and then turn down and slightly simmer for 1-1 1/2 hours. fall apart yummy. serve over mashed potatoes or rice with a salad or nice veggie. enjoy!

i would sugest that you marinate it prior to cooking as it is a tough cut of meat.........then cook it in the oven on about 350 for about i hr covered i even use the marinate to cook it in......when serving it you will have to slice it downward into very thin slices......i like using it for sauerbraten and marinate it for 2 to 3 days ........

It's tough meat so either you have to tenderize it or marinate it. Giada (foodnetwork.com) has a really yummy recipe, if you want to take the time. (Involtini of Beef)
Or just use your meat tenderizer, season it well and broil it.
