Get referrals from the AKC (they have a website: http://www.akc.org/future_dog_owner/index.cfm?nav_area=future_dog_owners), try rescues in the breed you want (pug rescues, shepherd rescues, etc.), the humane society, the local animal shelter, etc. Also, you can check the pet finder search feature (http://www.petfinder.com/) They also have links to shelters and rescues on their site. Otherwise, check with local vet's office (helpful if a breeder/seller requires a vet reference) and grooming parlors.

try your local animal shelter or SPCA or Humane Society they have a large variety of breeds, and ages not only will you find the dog that is right for you, you will be giving a dog a much needed and loving home. And they usually don't cost much to adopt and will come with all of it's shot's and if it's old enough it will already be spayed or neutered. Happy Puppy Hunting

Check your local animal shelters.

Do not buy a puppy from the classifieds or from a petstore/warehouse. Most of these are puppymills dogs.

The pound of humane society. They need you and will reward you with trust and unconditional love. All you pay is neutering or spay fees.
