How long can you receive templates for a vehicle in California?

I bought a car from a friend that wasn't smoged and the tags were almost expired. The tags were expired in June 2006. Can I still get a template? I've received 2 the last one in Sept 2006. Is there a big fee. 1985 Seville

If you purchase or acquire a vehicle from a private party, you have 10 days from the date of sale to report to DMV the change of ownership. Transfer fees must be paid to DMV within 30 days of the purchase date, even if you do not have all of the required documents.
