You can try going to the state society of CPA's website and ask them for a list in your area. Not all CPA's join the state societies so there is a bit of screening that goes on.

Another approach is to call CPA's just outside your area and have them recommend someone.

Definitely ask around and get other peoples opinion. but also, once you go visit one of these accountant's that someone you know referred you, think of it as an interview. what are like? are they competent? do they make you feel comfortable? do they explain things to you in a way you can understand? or are you leaving there more confused than when you got there? ask them if they go to more up to date tax classes regularly and ask them if they are involved in their local chapters of cpa's. you want a cpa that is up to date, not doing things the "old fashioned way". good luck to you!!

I'm raising my hand!

My clients are nationwide. I work by fax and email.

Most CPA's are not tax specialists. Enrolled Agents are licensed by the Treasury Dept and are certified Tax Specialists. So if you don't pick me, please pick an equally qualified compatriot with the Enrolled Agent designation!

Find one in private practice, good luck after waiting until now though. Whatever you do AVOID H&R BLOCK! They basically have some highschool grad just using tax software like Turbo Tax, you could do that yourself (actually I'd recommend it).

the only way to find a good one is from word of mouth, ask your friends & family.
