We are a couple with a 6 year old boy. We would like to spend a week based out of somewhere nice in the mountains in North or NE - renting a house/chalet or staying in a 3-4 star hotel. We like hiking, "adventure" things suitable for a 6 year old, won't mind if there are other kids around, cultural attractions, eco-things, etc...

We would like to be able to travel for a day trip to Austria or Switzerland too, from where we are, so some decent highway access is important.

Language is not a problem as we are fluent in Italian.

We would like somethng somewhat rural or mountainous, although a lake holiday is great too. We have stayed in San Sirmione (in the winter), which was great.

Bolzano would be a good home base, especially if you rent a car. Hotel Citta in Bolzano has a wellness center that open in the afternoons and evenings, and admission is free for guests.

I recommend The Garda Lake near Verona. Its a great lake for us Europeans with many condos, houses and hotels. You can hike in the area, mountains surrounding the lake, biking and see the beautiful city of Verona. Its not far to Milano. Gardaland is nice for your kid. Enjoy your trip!
To Austria or Switzerland is a 2 hrs drive.
