Does anyone know if its legal to possess a tazer stun gun in a commercial vehicle for self defense, I would imagine CA wouldn't allow it. But what about more normal, non-liberal wacko states? What about regular guns or other weapons? Let's not turn this into a debate on the right to protect one's self, or whether we want truck drivers to have weapons. We're no different than anyone else, except we carry, at times, some very expensive merchandise or hazmat cargo.

I agree entirely with Christopher H. about the concerns over the legality and effectiveness of a taser.

I think there would be fewer objections over OC spray (oleoresin capsicum - a.k.a. pepper spray) in most common personal defense sizes. Near as I can recall, it's the least restricted less-lethal self-defense tool with any kind of range on it that you can resonably carry around on your person. Some states have particular restrictions on size and potency, and special "state legal" packages are sold by retailers.

I've had both OC and a handheld electorshock weapon used on me. The handheld-taser was instantly debilitating, if used correctly, but the the OC was very effective as well. In practice, it was much easier to use OC spray in more situation. Any of my fall and winter coats neutralized the handheld-taser. My heavier riding coats would likely neutralize a taser-gun, too. Consider, also, taser guns aren't effective if your aim stinks. If you miss, you're in trouble.

I think there'd be few objections, too, to conventional tools to be made accessible for self defense purposes. Heavens knows I'm more cautous around someone carrying a tire iron, yet nobody would think it irregular for a comercial driver to be in possession of one (so long as they weren't doing anything shady).

I'll attach some links to reviews of the effectiveness and legalities of handheld-tasers, taser guns and pepper sprays. Some links go into great details about the strengths and weaknesses of each. Maybe you can figure something out based on your routes and situations.

Tazers are not legal to carry in some states but if you can legally posses one I would think it would be legal to carry it in your vehicle. If you do not own the vehicle you may be restricted by your employer as to being able to carry one in the vehicle.

I personally am not a big fan of the tazer. While they often do work, they don't work all the time. Also something as simple as thick clothing or a heavy leather jacket could defeat them. And most importantly to me is that you only have one shot. But if this is the best course open to you, you will have to look at the laws germane to the state you live in.

I know you cannot have a firearm of any kind ,, with the possible exception of a shotgun with a barrel over 18".
Sorry don't know about a taser.
