The first aircraft to incorporate the principles of the jet engine was the Coanda-1910 (Romania), piloted by its inventor Henri CoandÄ in 1910. The engine of this aircraft, unlike the modern jet engine, used a piston engine rather than a turbine to drive its compressor. Unfortunately, the aircraft crashed during its first and only demonstration, however remaining mostly intact.
At the airport of Issy-les-Moulineaux near Paris, CoandÄ lost control of the jet plane, which went off of the runway and caught fire. Fortunately, he escaped with just a good scare and some minor injuries to his face and hands. Around that time, CoandÄ abandoned his experiments due to a lack of interest and support on the part of the public and of scientific and engineering institutions.
CoandÄ died in Bucharest November 25, 1972 at the age of 86.

The invention of the first working turbojet engine is generally attributed to Frank Whittle of the RAF. The first operational jet aircraft in the US was the F-80 Shooting star and in GB was the Meteor (I think).
