As an Electronic Engineering Technician, I worked very closely with an Electrical Engineer that was a real "git 'er done" person. That person was intelligent, efficient, knowledgeable, and FEMALE.
I believe you are on a good track. Don't worry what others will do or think. After all the bumps in the road you should do well.

There is always a mix of people in a class, some more social, some a**holes, some just average. Most people worked along fine with the women. If you're attractive expect to be hit on a lot. One observation I have is that EEs tend to be very emotionally illiterate and once on the job you can expecte that people will be very tactless in criticising your work. That said, I think that women bring something different to engineering in that they're better at identifying the needs of people and can do extremely well in marketing, sales, project management. If you want to do design, that's an option too. If you want it, there is no reason why you cannot complete a BSEE degree. Do not let potential class dynamics dissuade you. Also remember that studying at university is very different than studying in high school. You'll do a lot of lab work with a partner and usually people study alone or in small groups. Lectures are nothing like high school and material is covered very fast.

The main factor of success has nothing to do with you being female. Do you have a strong interest in engineering, math and science? Are you interested in technology. Are your math and physics skills good enough. Do you have the patience to go to a course that is longer hours and harder than many others.
If the answer is yes you'll do great and have a blast.
As to the being female in a class full of males - I took my degree in the mid 80's - there were few females in class - but those that were were treated the way they wanted to be. Always with respect (remember the stereotype of a male engineer - geek who is shy with women - there are elements of truth). And if they wanted to be one of the guys they were treated like one. Certainly if they could hold their own in class, they were fully integrated with the 'guys' that was true of males and females.
It's not like high school - people taking engineering and sciences are motivated and want to be there and do well - so the dynamic is good.
Also university is more than just your class. Join societies and -play sports (particularly ones where the clubs/teams are coed) you will have a great experience.
So my advice - do it and don't worry about being the lone female.

you can't really worry about how you will be treated- its more about having the itelligence and the drive to learn somewhat difficult material. If you worry about everyone else and how they treat you, my guess is that you're destined to change majors when the math gets tough.
I'm sure you can do it if you make up your mind and commit to following through. ITs a good field and you can do a lot to change the world- it will be engineers that find ways to conserve energy and create renewable energy sources.
I've worked as a mechanical engineer for over 20 years and we have not done a good job recruiting anybody and especially women. You can make a good living and make the world a better place for all and I would encourage you to consider the electrical engineering profession.

Well, I did my undergraduate degree in Chemistry (and my Ph.D. as well). I can tell you this - I didn't treat the women in my classes any different than the guys. It's not electrical engineering, but it is a field that tends to be dominated by men.
I would share notes, study together, etc. with women just as I would with any other guy. I didn't treat them carefully, or anything like that.
But that was just my experience. Good luck with your pursuits!
