is the old testament really irrelavent, do we now cast out an old version of God, and when not convenient for us, say it's not for today and we must insist to read new testament as if it's somehow not based in old one, or a different belief?

Many people do discredit the OT, BUT, that does NOT make it irrelevant AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The OT is so real, even today, to my life, and the lessons learned from it are amazing. I am currently doing an extensive study of the OT and I have learned so much. (like in school, not on my own) The OT is based on the old system of atonement, and the new testament introduces the new system and gets rid of the old one. The old system of Atonement was sacraficing animals and they had a specific list of things they could and couldn't do and what kind of animal they should sacrafice, based on the reason behind the sacraficing (grain, fellowship, sin, burnt, and guilt) and they're social class. The old system was only temporary and came from the tribe of Levi ( the Levites were the only ones allowed in the Most Holy Place without dying because of their sins). The New System is permanent, and it was the sacrifice was God's son. Jesus Christ, the Messiah. The New System came from the tribe of Judah. There are more things, but in short, the OT is just as important as the NT, but more people enjoy the NT... LIfe is short, pray; HARD!

The Old Testament is a mirror of the New Testament.....throughout the old testament we find so many wonderful things..about how God "spoke" to people, how sin was dealt with, all of it pointing to the Messiah. God's Law was given..Moses Law was given..such a wealth of information that help unravel some things in the New Testament. God's character is reflected all throughout both testaments. We need both testaments to get the whole picture..from beginning to end of everything.

I will take a shot at the question; I was raised in a sect that did that!
The scriptures tell us the 'old testament' was done away. However, the scriptures define 'old testament' one way; a second 'old testament' definition has been added; thus there are 2 'old testaments'. One of them presently (in the USA) has not been eliminated. The scriptural old testament is the law of Moses; the unscriptural old testament is Genesis-Malachi.

The OT is still valid to this day. God has never broken any covenant, men have. The reason why many embrace the NT is because they are not being taught the OT in churches, which ministers or pastors say that is is done away with. Plus many misinterpret what Paul is actually saying. Even he kept the Laws. If you want to know what Yeshua (Jesus) was talking about in the NT, then you need to go back to the OT. Remember in John, can't remember what chapter, (paraphrasing here) "If you do not believe in the words of Moses' words (Moshe), how is it that you will believe in my words?"

When the Laws (Torah) was given to the people of Israel, it was not only to them, it was to ALL NATIONS. He mentioned to the people that were not even there too, that couldn't be there. We are all his children and we should not ADD or SUBTRACT from His words.

All of the bible is important, but we are no longer under the law , outlined in the old testament. We are under a different covenant now. All of the bible is good for teaching and inspiration.

To follow the Old Testament is to follow the Law. Paul says in Galatians 5: 4- Christ is become of no effect unto you whosoever of you are justified by the law: ye are fallen from grace.

Good Christians embrace the New Testement. Didn't Jesus say, keep the Laws of Moses? The Laws of Moses are found nowhere else but the Old Testement , in the Bible.

The Old Testement also tells us something of the origins leading up to Christianity and Islam. The relevance is up to you.
