Here is my take on it:. Cigarattes and Alchohol have been with us for a long time. I will not be surprised if we can trace the origin of cigarattes and alchole back for more than a thousand years. They have become part of humanity and part of our guilty pleasure. We know they are bad for us, but we are gonna anyway because of the sensation they gave us.
MJ, on the other hand, is relatively new. It can probably be traced back to 100 years or so, or at least the wilder use of it. Yet, MJ's effect is dramatically overwhelming. It alters one's perception of things around them for long period of time and it can be sustained by taking more of it. Normally, alchohol and cigarrates can ruin families at most. Yet, MJ can ruin nations and drain treasuries. It is almost taboo to touch MJ at all, which is probably why conservatives are so very against legalizing it.
Just a theory. Seems to make sense though. lol.

Several years ago, in Ohio, a freight train slammed into a passenger train killing ~30 passenger. The engineer of the freight train ignored the "track clear" warning lights several miles before the accident. He also admitted to smoking marijuana prior to the crash.
Marijuana, like alcohol, impairs the users judgement. The long-term health risks accociated with alcohol use/overuse are well documented. There have not been any significant studies on the long-term health risks associated with marijuana use/overuse primarily because marijuana is illegal and does not have the same funding available for research. However one significant study found that a person who "smoked one marijuana cigarette a day had the same risk of developing lung cancer as a person who smoked one tobacco cigarette a day."
The reason marijuana is illegal goes way back to the early 20th century. Racism did play a part, but it had more to do with migrant workers coming to the U.S. from Mexico. At one time alcohol was illegal as well, but all that did was create unenforceable laws and put more money in the pockets of Al Capone and Joe Kennedy. Had marijuana been as popular as alcohol, back when it was outlawed, I'm sure those laws would've been repealed as well.
Marijuana use skyrocketed in the western world during the counter-culture era of the 60's. I believe one of the reasons it remains popular, especially among young people, is that it is cheaper and easier to obtain than alcohol.

I have always thought that marijuana is Gods gift to nature. The Indians, and other ancient folklore smoked their peace pipes and never hurt a soul. Now we've finally found that it has medicinal benefits as well.So c'mon...... U,S, Senate, let's get with the program, and stop allowing a drug that kills through violence and car accidents (alcohol) to remain legal, and a drug that is a weed (For Gods sake), and doesn't make people violent, but silly instead...Remain Illegal? What's wrong with this picture?

I'd like to infrom Mr. A.R.G.O.S. that simplay because someone test positve for marijuana doesnt mean that they are impaired. Marijuana can stay in ones system for months depending on how heavily they smoke. You are only intoxicated for a couple hours. So hypotheically some can get in a accident while they were impaired by marijuana, but more than likely they aren't. Plus it isn't marijuana that kills its the decision of the driver to drive while intoxicated that kills.

I had to notify 2 families their sons had been killed in an accident. Both tested positive for cannabis while driving. Marijuana impairs your judgement as does alcohol but in different ways. Although indirectly cannabis does kill.
Go ask the family I notified the bad news to. I'm sure they'll be happy to a answer this question.
Laws are there to protect the public. No matter if " you " agree with them or not.

Marijuana will be legalized as soon as the government can control it. They'll get to set prices by THC content and so forth. It won't be legal until they can profit from. Just an opinion from an "old head" It doesn't matter if a product kills as long as they profit from it!!!

It's because marijuana is hard to regulate, since it can be grown anywhere.
Remember when prohibition was deemed unconstitutional? It was because people were still drinking, and the sales of alcohol produced a black market.
If the government could regulate and tax marijuana, it would be legal today.

I got news for ya, the smoke that you inhale from pot is thicker and more lethal than general ol' cigs. Both are bad either way. Coats your lungs just the same if not more. Marijuana is helpful for cancer pts and I believe it's legal in some states for medicinal purposes. SO.. I would have to agree that it does have it's uses I guess.

Because the goverment is f#@ked up. there afraid of losing money from the billion dollar tobaco co. and if they legalize pot they have no african americans to throw in jail.
it is all a plot to supress the african american race, sence slavery and white's only
days are gone they(goverment)use drugs ( the goverment brought over here in the 20's-40's with the drug trade, especially cocane to make them work harder and when that did not work they shot them) so they made drugs including pot illegal to imprison people just like slaves.
my sorce the history chanel
I think they should make pot legal.

Don't be naive in thinking that marijuana is safer than tobacco. There are more carcinogens in marijuana than in tobacco.
It's not that I am an advocate for tobacco. Smoking anything is stupid. So just give up the doper lifestyle Bevis and get up from your mom's couch and get haircut and a job.
