This site tells you everything you could ever want ( and not want ) to know about Strep :
http://www.niaid.nih.gov/factsheets/strep.htm

Here are the highlights :

- After taking the antibiotic for 24 hours, you will no longer be infectious to others, and,

- You will start feeling better within 4 days of starting the antibiotic treatment.

I've had Strep twice; I feel for you. Both times I had it, as necessary as liquids are for keeping the body hydrated, I found drinking liquids extremely painful. If the same applies to you, try what I did : Jello. It's soft and slips down the throat easily.

From personal experience, please be sure to watch out for the following :

- increased temperature
- mouth and throat becoming redder &/or more painful.

If either of the above happens, please contact your doctor's office or, if after-hours, your local Med Clinic or ER.

Should it come to it, for extreme mouth &/or throat pain, there is a gooey liquid medication - I can't remember the name of it - that you swirl around inside your mouth. This medication is NOT meant to be swallowed ... you swirl it around for about a minute, until your mouth and throat are numb, and then spit it out. If memory serves, it's basically a liquid novacaine. ( This goes back about 30 yrs for me, so I'm only assuming that it still gets prescribed. )

I hope you're feeling much better real soon !!

Strep throat is an infection caused by group A streptococcus bacteria, and it's very common among kids and teens. The symptoms of strep throat include fever, stomach pain, and red, swollen tonsils.

Strep throat usually requires treatment with antibiotics. With the proper medical care - along with plenty of rest and fluids - your child should be back to school and play within a few days.
