Architecture is more art than science. There is so much to learn that Architecture is a five-year program in college. Arch. mostly design any type of building.

Civil engineering includes many specialties. Some designing is done, but it is for engineering purposes rather than aesthetics. CEs design and build bridges. Appearance may be considered but form follows function...to steal a quote.

CEs design and build roads. Appearance is left to landscape architects.

CEs design, locate and monitor highway signs and lights (both street and traffic).

CEs examine and test soils to locate water or to determine what foundations are needed.

CEs design and build sewage treatment plants. Not much need for an architect there.

Architecture is a much more glamorous field. But jobs are few. CE jobs are relatively plentiful by comparison.

The two are vastly different:

CivE: You will take a ton of math and materials science and understand HOW to design and build something. Do not expect to be doing major design for the first 10 years of your career.

Arch: Requires much better design skills, including the ability to be creative. While Architecture student do study materials and math, it's not the same depth as in CivE. The focus is on understanding design and conceptualizing new things/structures. Usually competition is stiff and a master's degree is required to work as an architect designing things.

Both are fairly demanding in terms of time. If you're not very good at design, CivE is more appropriate (though you should be good a math). CivE is conceptually easier than some other brances of engineering (like Electrical or Chem).

Civil Engineering deals with building structures for public use such as bridges, highways and dams among other things. Architecture on the other hand usually deals with buildings such as houses or offices.

If you're not good at design, I'd suggest civil engineering. Usually if someone is going to pay for an architect to design something for them they expect the architect to have some design ability whereas a civil engineer is more concerned with function over design.

Civil Engineering is more tougher than Architecture because CE has many difficult subjects like hydraulics, unlike Architecture. Take note CE is more demmand than Architecture. Choose what is best for you..

a lot of good answers... but if you want a simple dirty answer, here it goes:

Arc: design
CEE: determine whether the design is sustainable
