if you have any earnings, the company you worked for will send you a w-2 and you file. like, even if you worked for 1 day within a year.

Based on your e-mail address, I assume you're residing in the United States. I'm quite often wrong, please correct me as necessary.

You actually need to file taxes every year unless you make less than the following yearly incomes under 65 years of age: (another assumption)

Single $8,450
Head of household $10,850
Widow(er) $13,600
Married (filing jointly) $16,900
Married (filing seperate) $3,300
(as of 2007-01-20)

If you are an US citizen, you will need to file your taxes before April 16, 2007.

August 2006 would count as the 2006 tax year, so if you've exceeded $8,450 or would like a tax return, you would file everything up till December 31st, 2006 as income for year 2006.

If you haven't earned more than $8,450 in 2006, you should not be taxed for 2006, and you should get a return.

For more information, including free file (free online tax federal filing), please see the official IRS website:

Hope this helps,
Ken

A-Ken gave an excellent answer. If you made less than the amount that requires filing, you can only claim a refund if you file.

NOTE: Why is he assuming you are in the US based on you e-mail address? The fact you posted the question under 'Taxes -> United States' should be enough to assume that.

I believe as long as your claiming yourself as an independent, free from your parents you would file your own taxes. If you are a dependent of your parents, then they do it for you. Also you need to have the W-2 forms to file your taxes.

It is not the length of time you work...it is the amount of money that you earn.

Even if you don't work you file.

I repeat, even if you don't work you still have to report that to the IRS. You won't pay or get back, but you still have to file with them.

Yes you can, and depending on how much you made, you might be required to.
