DO NOT GIVE ASPRIN UNLESS YOU CONSULT YOUR VET FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Aspirin and other non-steriodial anti inflammatory drugs (pain relief) can cause gastric ulceration.
Go to vet and they will talk you through the correct dosage and what you need to do to prevent gastric ulceration.
Kidney/liver failure only occurs in very long term use or if your pet already has Kidney/liver disease. Most dogs are fine on these drugs.
Some drug possiblities are Rimadyl, Metacam, Carprofen, Previcox, Dermamaxx to name a few.
Some vets also suggest a series of 4 injections called cartrophen vet, they aid in the regrowth of cartlidge and pain relief and often after the 2nd injection you can see a massive difference.
You should also start giving your dog Glucosamine - its a supplement that helps in the regrowth of cartlidge in joints (arthritis in dogs is oestoarthritis which is a degeneration of the cartlidge) Get the human 1000mg tablets
1/4 tablet 0-10kg
1/2 tablet 11-25kg
3/4 tablet 26-35kg
1 tablet > 36kg.
Giving you pet a warm bed to sleep on helps
also doing small walks is good, just slow lead walks once a day to keep the joints moving. You probably find its worse in the morning after your dog has been still all night sleeping.
Do some gentle stretches with your dogs legs in the morning and massage to get them warm before he/she tries to stand.
Swimming is a great exercise for arthritic dogs as it is non weigh bearing but gets their body moving.

You can give the dog Bayer aspirin but it has to be given by weight and for no more than 3 days in a row so you only use the aspirin when absolutely necessary.
My dog is arthritic too. When he starts limping I break out the heating pad and set it on medium.I have him lay down and apply the pad to the areas I know hurt for about 10 minutes before moving the pad. Then he gets a massage for 15 minutes.Getting your dog into warm water will help alot too.Swimming is the best exercise he can get as the water holds his weight off the joints.
When weather is cold and wet it affects the joints something terrible.Exercise is absolutely necessary.Don't push the dog too hard but try to get it to go a little farther everyday to keep the joints loosened up.And don't miss a day because the dog is acting too sore.because you're doing nothing but allowing the joints to get stiffer.Just don't try to go very far or at a fast pace.
Don't walk your dog on concrete as it has no give at all and is hard on the joints.I know because I also have arthritis in both feet and ankles. The grass is much easier to walk on and the terrain needs to be as flat as possible.
I also give mine glucosomine/chrondroitin and it's helped alot with swelling but I understand there are alot of other herbals out there people are having good luck with.

Talk to your vet.
Be warned though, if your vet suggests Rimadyl, get the facts before you put your dog on it. My dog was on it for two years and did fine, but Rimadyl CAN and DOES kill if not monitored by a vet.
Rimadyl causes liver and kidney damage. There are lawsuits out right now because of deaths caused by this drug.
You have to weigh the pros and cons though. My dog was also 13 when he started taking it. My vet told me all the risks and my decision was based on the fact that I might have shortened his life by a couple months, but he was more comfortable in his last 2 years and was able to walk because of Rimadyl. In the end though, his kidneys were not affected. We put him down because he refused to take his medicine no matter what we tried. He was old for his size and just plain tired. Icouldn't let him suffer anymore.
Rimadyl is not cheap. Aside fromt he drug, you have to get labs every couple months to monitor kidney and liver function. It's a great drug for some dogs and a killer for others.
We also had him on glucosamine and chondroiten for his joints as well as Tramadol for the pain. Your best bet is to talk to your vet.
Good luck!

One of my dachsies, the smallest, most independent female, just followed me around the house everywhere - unusual behavior for her and a sign she wants something, so I checked her out and sure enough she had some burrs stuck under her armpit. She hates that and it obviously happened when my husband walked her this morning. It's a very good sign that your dog trusts you and relies on you when he expects you to cure him of whatever ails him, so you obviously have a good relationship and bond with your dog. Some dogs go hide when they are in pain, I've seen that in new fosters I took in who don't quite believe that they are now safe and will get help for what ails them and that's very sad. My dogs expect me to fix whatever is wrong with them because they know they can rely on me, that's the way it should be.

As other posters have said, talk to your vet. It would be wrong of us to tell you what medications to use because we do not know the size of your dog. Your vet will know what dosage of what medicine to give your dog. There are many wonderful medications out there to help your dog. Until you get him into the vet, however, try using a heating pad on him. Don't make it TOO hot, though. :) Warmth can help relieve the pain of arthritis. Still, get him to a vet as soon as you can. Good luck!

Do talk to your vet. I've heard of dogs being given doggie pain killers, and glucosamine and chondroiton.

Do NOT give your dog ANY medications until you have talked to your vet. One mistake in any dosage will possibly kill your dog.
