Why not tell her to get dressed up in her best gear and take her out for a really posh lunch somewhere and pre-order a chauffer driven car. Tell the restaurant to make a big fuss of her too when you arrive (order flowers etc). I think that would be nice - maybe arrange for some of her friends to be there too and pick them up en route.

Ahh been there done that... We being her daughters organised a surprise party, more like open house really, I traced people from her past even old school friends and friends from her time in the army, people came from far and wide. Every one signed a postcard and photos taken of everyone, which we made into a huge album. The following day she flew a helicopter, which she loved, but said the best present was having ALL her family(4 daughters, 10 Grandchildren, 7 Great Grandchildren, cousins etc) and friends with her sharing happy memories. We all bought her presents as well, I gave her a trip to London with tea at the Ritz.
What ever you decide to do, have a wonderful time with your Mum x

How about getting all the people in her life to put special messages in a big book with photos of them all ? or get some of her old tatty photos restored and framed beautifully (maybe her wedding photo if the memories are good !) or perhaps an experience that she never had - that she always wanted too like a balloon ride (if she is up to it !) or a big themed party on her favourite Era like the forties, you could get everyone to dress up, have the music from that era - and have the photos from her at that time blown up around the room - a trip down memory lane. Hope she has a good time whatever you decide, good luck :)

My mother too is turning 80 and I know she loves a good book but what would be really special is to make a scrap book with photos of everyone from birth to now. Scan the pics onto the computer and print them out in groups. Cut around the people and maybe make a page per each child, of her, of dad, of grandparents if you have any. Ask her for photos she has and say you just want to scan them onto your pc. Dont tell her why.
If thats too hard then get a picture frame with mounting board inside. Get a largish one and pencilo margins onto the mounting board. Take photos of your family, scan and cut out and make a huge collage inside the pencilled frame. I did that for my dad and he loved it. Meant the world to him. Was better than a bought gift
get creative. Parents really appreciate it. Involve your kids and grandchildren if you have any around.
I can tell you it \gave me great pleasure to make my own!
Hope you like the idea.

Arrange a get-together for her with you and the rest of your siblings. Depending on your preferences, you may want to even make it without grandkids and/or spouses. We did that last year for my mom. All five kids plus my mom stayed at a downtown hotel for two nights. We ate out, talked, laughed and it was wonderful. If that's not possible, how about a picture album with pictures of you, your siblings, her grandkids. And maybe even a section for special times that you and your siblings remember. This would be a wonderful keepsake for her and would be worth more than a scarf, vase or other item.

Take her out for the day and shopping for an outfit. Have her pick it out and you buy it. Every lady could benefit from something new in the closet.
Take her to lunch after wards and let her enjoy her time with YOU !! When you get her back home, head to her closet and have her pick out one outfit that this now new outfit will replace. Then inform her that you will donate it to a local charity. She might just have more to give you for donating.
Really, all moms really want is to have some time with someone they love. Take her out and show her.
: )
Have a fun day with your mom !!

If you are thinking sentimental why not get a scrap book together of all your family photos and letters from friends etc you can buy or make beautiful scrap books and personalise it she will love it personal things are far more meaningful than something you can buy.
